Ok, gotta do this sometime, the dreaded 1st post:

What type of marking (if any) does Ford put on their pinion gears, for the 8.8” axle, to identify the variance of the pinion from the optimal test depth?

I'm often left to measure cheapo after-market or other un-marked pinion variances so that I can establish a starting-point for installation of replacement gears. Knowing what the manufacturing variance was for the installed pinion, and the existing shim thickness provides a great starting point (and short-cut!).

After closely inspecting the pinion I found nothing that would directly correspond to the pinion variance, any thoughts (secret codes, or ???) ?

Did I miss something?

There isn't one, use the old shim from the original pinion as a starting point, that's what I've found to work best.
