Hi,

I have a 99 Explorer and I am looking at replacing the head unit. Does anybody have any experience with the Pioneer FH-P4000? It is a double-DIN unit like the factory one.

Thanks,
Glenn

I had a FH-P404 put in in 1999 or so. Check my signature for how it fits, looks, etc. I assume the 4000 is the new series of DD sized units. The small filler around the radio is a metallic black, so it shows up as silver when the flash was used. However, it matches the Explorer's radio moulding (black).

Thanks for the info and the picture. The FH-P4000 and the model above it, the FH-P8800, both have a silver colored finish. I am a little worried about how it will look compared to the dark colored factory unit.

Here is a link to the picture of it on Pioneer's web site.

Have you been happy with the FH-P404?

Thanks,
Glenn

I had the Pioneer FH-P8800 in my Explorer with a scosche kit and it fit perfect. Regarding your concerns about it blending in with the Explorer dash, I can confirm your concerns that it DOES NOT blend well. Its noticable, so noticable, in fact, that they broke into my X and ripped mine off. Its was a great unit though.

R.I.P. Pioneer FH-P8800

Long Live Pioneer DEH-P930! An even BETTER unit!

The 404 has been a good unit. No problems since I bought it. My install was all shop-custom since they never heard of the kit (even though the ad for the 404 they had showed a kit... go figure). However, they did one hell of a job. It's silver and it *does* stick out. However, I keep it garaged when not in use and my whole area is relatively low on crime, so I haven't had any problems with anyone trying to make it their own. Furthermore, I think it still looks good in the dash, but that's my two cents (maybe the $500 I paid for it and installation is swaying my opinion? :D) Good luck with your choice!

OUCH!! That hurts. :(

The 404 looks pretty similar to the FH-P4000. I have decided to buy it. I'm sick and tired of losing my head unit's display. Plus I found a GREAT price on it.

Thanks,

Hi Adam,

>>Infinity Kappa 5x7s

I forgot to mention that I also got the 5 X 7 kappas put in a month or so ago and I'm very happy with them so far. I have the factory sub in back but I'm also considering replacing it.

Which Kappas? Were the cones green or another color? I have the green ones (572.1cf - older model, but then when I put them in, they were new like the FH-P404 heh...). They still outperform most speakers for their age.

Mine are not the green ones. Those were the year before. Mine are the 572.5cf model. I think they are pretty similar except for the color. I never did figure out that green or Sony's red for that matter. :)
