Plastic under Radiator

What does that big plastic thing under the radiator actually do if anything. (I took mine off yesterday to get back my 3/8 drive ratchet I dropped in the fan shroud while changing the belt. I have been too lazy to put it back. If it serves no real purpose I won't do it for a while. If it does, I will put it back on tonight before I have to drive it tomorrow.

That flat "scoop"? You can get rid of it, though I left a few inches of it to protect the botton of the radiator from stones.

ive had mine off for a long time, and so have many others and ive havent seen any bad affects from it.
