Hi all, i have searched the forum to try and identify my problem but it seems it could be 1 of many things. I'll explain the problems i have noticed.

It has a whine which gets noticable around 60mph, seems like its coming from the rear but not sure, and you can feel a vibration in your feet, gets louder as you increase speed and whine is still there when take the load off. A couple of weeks later the ABS light came on (and is still on).

Before the whining started i did notice a small thump/jump when accelerating away sharpish, especially on a right hand turn!! Still doing this but hasn't got any worse.

Also when i pull up and reverse back i have noticed a small clunk or judder now and again!

Not sure whether these are all linked to one problem or seperate issues. As this is my only mode of tranport, i cant afford to have the truck off the road for to long and replacing parts here and there hoping i find the problem eventually! Would appreciate any help to identify the more likely problem first instead of taking pot luck. Cheers, Ken

Bump.

Any ideas?
Wondering whether its time to say goodbye to the ol girl :-(

Maybe i'm asking a dumb question :-(

Hi Kert0307, there is some evidence of oil leakage but it looks old as if its been there for ages. I have no oil patches on the drive where its parked most of the time.

My 97 Sport whines from about 30-35 on up....I noted that if I back off the gas the whine lessens or goes away UNTIL I step back on the foot feed.

A local mechanic advised that I try 3 qts of LUCAS 85w140 Synthetic gear oil...he said that especially on explorers and rangers, it usually helps a lot.

I ordered 3 qts online for $12 per qt...$36 might save me several hundred $$$ and lots of work swapping rear ends...worth a try and I will post the results...

its your supercharger whinning up

First things I would do is check the oil level in the rear diff, check tire wear and balance, check drive shaft u-joints and drive shaft slip yoke.

Next, check t-case outputs for play, take off the rear diff cover and inspect the gears.

EH SUPERCHARGER??????????????

Think this is going to be a longer job than i hoped, oh well. I'll check all those things for wear this week apart from the tyres cos i know its not that (been changed and no difference). Thanks Guys.

I have the same problem with my explorer. Did the 3 quartz of fluid fix it or is it still whining?
