Hello All,
I'm a new member from Va that stumbled across this site a couple months ago when I decided to replace the tranny in my 97 xplorer with 265k on the clock. The main symptom was a whurring sound coming from what I thought was the trans when decelerating. After swapping the trans for a decent used one with 80k on it still had the same problem. I read a couple post on here that led me to believe that it was the transfer case that was failing. I had a "mechanic" friend of mine look at it and he stated that the "front" rear sounded like it was the problem. Replaced that with a used one out of a 98 xplorer and now the truck shifts really funny as if its shifting all the gears in like 5 seconds. The rear had the same ratio but is it possible that it just wasn't compatible? I let this truck sit for a year before doing anything with it and now that I've started I'm really anxious to get it back in running form again. Any help would be appreciated.
Thx, Melvin.
