I know this has been discussed, but I searched and came up empty-handed in the sense that I could only find information that wasn't general enough for my needs.

This is now my second 1995 Explorer to start flashing the dreaded "O/D Off" light. :fire:

For the first truck, the symptoms included slow and jerky shifting (so much so that it lurched severly), and if you drove it long enough the car wouldn't move despite accelerating. When this happened, a turn off and restart of the car would allow the car to move again, albeit still with the indicator flashing and jerky shifting. The diagnosis with my first one was a bad Pressure Control Valve. I had the part replaced and the problem was fixed, with no more "O/D Off" indicator problems until I sold the truck.

Now, with the second one, the symptoms are similar. Slow shifting, and jerky although not as jerky as the first since the car doesn't lurch as much. Interestingly, it came while driving totally randomly, which leads me to believe it's nothing major since it was working perfectly before. It seems to me that it's the same problem, but I'm not sure if there are a series of problems that could cause the same symptoms.

Do you think that this would be the same problem, and if I replace the Pressure Control Valve, would it be fixed?

If not, what do you recommend? But if you think my guess is correct, I would like to do it myself this time. Has anyone changed this part? Where would the best place to get one be, and where in the truck is it located?

Thanks so much! :)

The 'jerky' shifting happens automatically when the OD light starts flashing. Essentially, the trans goes into 'limp' mode. Pull the codes and see if they reveal anything. If not, unhook the battery for 5 minutes to reset everything. If the OD light comes back on, get it looked at further. My OD light starts blinking on my 95 about once a year. I've pulled codes to no avail. Resetting it, takes care of it for another year or so. I suspect at some point I'll need to have some trans work done, but I'm at 165k and still running fine. BTW... it's not good to drive it in limp mode any great distance.
