I have a 2005 Explorer xlt 4.0 sohc with about 120,000 mile on it and was driving down the expressway yesterday when i noticed a noise upon acceleration. I rolled down the window a heard a knocking noise coming from the front of the vehicle. I checked the gauges and everything was fine. Oil , temp and voltage were all normal and i still had power and it was running fine except for this noise. When i got home i pulled into the garage and popped the hood while it was still running and this knocking sound was horrendous and seemed like it was coming from the power steering pump. I shut it off and pulled the belt off and checked the power steering pump to see if the bearing froze up or something and the pulley spun freely but had about an 1/8 of an inch of play in it. I also checked all the other pulley and everything seemed fine. I put the belt back on and started it again and still the same knocking sound was there. Now i must say it did'nt sound like a rod knock and again all the gauges where fine. I shut it off to take another look and could not see anything. Then i started it again, it still knocked then all of a sudden it died. I tried to restart it and it cranks but will not start. I even tried taking the belt off and starting it but it still won't start and now seems like the battery is low since it is cranking slower. I am getting a code reader tonight but was wondering if anybody has any idea on this problem. I have been looking through the forums and have been seeing some stuff about timing chain issues and i hope that is not the case. Are you really better off replacing the engine if you have a broken timing chain? If anyone can help i would really appreciate it. Thanks again
