Those of you with the Explorer Express Eaton or the Powerdyne centrifugal on your 96+ Explorer V8, what are you running for spark plugs and where do you have the gap set?

Also, did either of those kits come with a chip to change timing?

I am trying to determine a safe level of boost to run with my custom setup, prior to having a chip burned.

Thanks!

just my $0.02, because i dont have a blown explo (although i had a Powerdyne 91 GT at one time...)

copper plugs (im sure you know this already). id start with one heat range colder as that should be enough. the KB doesnt put out a very hot intake charge at sane boost levels, and isnt that bad on predetonation. personally, id run them at about 35 on the gap and then pull them a month or two later and check 'em out. as you know the DIS throws alot hotter spark than a distributer.

im 99% positive neither kit comes with a chip. both are at 6spi out of the box which is safe to run with full timing. it would be a good idea to run a 180 'stat if the winters in your area will allow.

im guessing you're not using an FMU. if not, what injectors are you using?

forgive me if im insulting you with these suggestions, as im sure you already know most of what i just said. hopefully someone who actually owns a blown explorer will chime in here soon with what they're running. :D

edit, i see now you're in Michigan. you may wanna hold of on the stat until next spring. ;)

I got my first glimpse of cool air a few days back, Ooohh, I can't wait for winter. MY truck has always ran much stronger with the cool dense air, it should be fun with the blower.

As for the plugs, I installed Autolite Copper 103's, which are one range cooler than the 104's that are stock replacement. They were gapped 0.035" in the box, and that is where I left them, based on Corral recommendations.

My query came from the 0.054" gap the original motorsport plugs had. Maybe DIS has a larger gap. I don't ever remember running a gap that large on anything. I am used to the ~0.035" gap.

I agree with you on the kits not having a chip, but just want to make sure. I do have one leg up on the stock setups though, as I am running returnless fuel injection, a 255lhp pump, billet fuel rails, and Aeromotive adjustable regulator. I have the stock injectors in now, but have 36lb'ers and a 90mm Lightning MAF in the garage. Once I get a chance to install them and get a dyno tuned FordCHip made, I will not worry. I actually bought a Kenne Bell FMU to use in the meantime, but it had 1/8 NPT ports!!! I am affraid that port size would not allow me to get LOW enough fuel pressure off boost with the 255 pump. It would choke the return line at all times. I wish the Cartech adjustable FMU's weren't $200 used. I would buy one for the mean time before I get the chip.

Thanks for the suggestions.

if you are running stock heads you can use a ford 22c or 12c or if you like NGK you can use a TR6 those all coper plugs. between a .34 and .44 gap depening on how it run and if you have a dis-4.
