1997 Merc Mountaineer - have the coolant leak issue - realized was coming from 90 degree elbow hose aka bypass hose. Pulled off today to replace and was actually the valves hose plugs into. Valve against block came clean off! And one against water pump is a stub with flat piece of valve that used to be there earlier and has holes in it. Are these plug in valves I can get to replace them with? Or do I end up replacing the water pump and whatever piece this is against the block to have the valves back to plug bypass hose into? Help! Lol I am a female and doing excellently to have gotten this far and half know what I am talking about. I am freaking out this is my only way to go and now I am stuck :(

Nope. Definitely the bypass hose although it wasn't the hose itself just these valves it plugs into that had disintegrated so causing fluid to spray right below that larger hose above it. I tjink the larger hose is the upper radiator hose not sure? Anyway I am hoping or asking are these valves plug ins or do I need to replace the entire water pump and other piece against the block which I have no clue what it is. If they are plug in valves I think I can do myself if not I am in trouble :(

Need someone familiar with the 5.0L V8 cooling system. Stand by, someone will chime in. GL

Appreciate your trying :) thanks!

on the 5.0L motor, the "bypass hose" goes from the thermostat housing to the water pump. there are no "valves" involved. the hose connects to what are called "nipples", one on the thermostat housing and one in the water pump. sorry, but from your description I have no idea what you are referring to. can you post a link to a picture?

it sounds like you need a new thermostat housing, thermostat and gasket, bypass hose, probably 2 new hose clamps, a new water pump and w/p gasket, antifreeze and distilled water. while your at it you might as well flush the cooling system. when you don't change your antifreeze electrolysis eats the metal parts of your cooling system. this can be measured using a VOM by placing the positive lead in your radiator's antifreeze and grounding the negative lead to the battery. 1.5 volts or less is okay. if you see up to 3 volts your antifreeze is way overdue for a change.
