- 2000 Ford Explorer XLT
Im repairing an Axl seal on my 2000 Ford Explorer XLT. All I did so far was drain the fluid and take off the diff cover off last night. I turned the wheels to spin the ring gear (the largest gear in diff housing) to find the pinion bolt and it was turning fine - then I realized I forgot to purchase a replacement pinion bolt just in case this one snapped so I covered the differential housing up with plastic to keep any debris out and stopped for the night. Today I returned to work on it, and the wheels are turning and they are also spinning the small gears inside the differential housing but now the ring gear is not turning as it was yesterday. I hadn’t done any work on it yet and like I said it was fine when I covered it up for the night. What could be going on?
