In 4th and 5th gears, my wonderful truck really bogs out. You can definately feel the truck fall out of its power band. I have also had a significant decrease in gas milage.

Any tips?

Thanks
Randy

Have you noticed it running rich? Black smoke, a rich fuel smell, or lots of quick soot buildup on the tailpipe?

what would this soot buildup look like?

scorgnetic are there any jumps or bumps that it does before it starts to bog? or does it start with shifting into these gears?

It doesnt seem to be running rich. When I first got here in San Diego after my move I had a smell but I have never smelled anything like it before in an auto so I cant explain what it smelled like. It wasnt oil or antifreeze so I dont know what else it could be.

Like I said, the powerband just drops right out when it shifts into 4th. I think I am lacking power all the way through the band but it is definately noticable in 4th and 5th.

I am getting an airbag code. Is this strictly related to the airbag system? i get a 3737.

So to make a long story short, no soot, no real bumpyness or anything unusaul during shifting. My truck is just a slug now? Poor girl

:(

By the way, when all of this started is when I towed 5000lbs in a Uhaul from NY to Cali.

Sorry about the length, and thanks for the help.

I smell O2 sensor difficulties here.... hook up an ONS II scanner and monitor the O2 sensors.

Good luck.....

I'm still thinking it may be the FPR, fuel pressure regulator.

Or, maybe something went wrong in the tranny with that long tow? The Sport with the V6 is definately not rated for a 5000 lb cross country tow!

wow, tahts quite a load..

I dont know abou tthat airbag code, but if its throwing that yo may wanna get that looked into also, just incase.. if yo uhave a wreck and yer airbag is dead you might get a nasty bruise heh or 3

well, I have a smel in my vehicle thats hard to explain also, do you get it constant or does it stay right within this #?

might be a long shot.. but with that tow you may have strained something.. torn ligament lol

Why would you guess the FPR? Do you think that its just that I'm not getting enough fuel in the higher gears?

The tow definately put a hurting on my baby. Looks like I should just do a V8 swap and be done with it.

Also, if it was an O2 sensor, I should notice that through all of the gears.

What tranny does my 99 sport have?

Auto: 5R55E

Yes, the FPR is often a culprit in bogging at higher gears and speeds. But I think you may have damaged your tranny.

Alec,

I'm trying to thing of what could go wrong in an auto tranny to cause such power drain on the top end. Maybe the valvebody is sticking?

Another thing that I have noticed is that if I get into WOT the power is there but just cruising at highway speeds my gas pedal feels mushy like when you apply gentle pressure to a mushy brake system. I just cant feel the power in the gas pedal if that makes sense?
I need to change my tranny fluid but I dont think that is going to make a difference.

I've never really owned an auto before, how do you drain the torque converter? Do you have any other tips that I should keep in mindwhen I change my pigs plasma?

Thanks a ton
Randy
