2006 ranger fx4 level 2
I just purchased a 2006 ranger 4.0L 4x4, I love it except in town fuel mileage is terrible. I average 20 to 22 mpg on the highway, but just running around it drops to 9 or 10mpg. I understand that mileage drops in stop and go driving but it,s too much of a change. Does anyone else have this problem and has anyone have any Ideals of any way to increase town mileage. Has anyone tried those modules claiming to give more mpg.

That's not right, my '07 with 25k miles (4.0 auto 4x4) has never gotten less than 14 even in nasty traffic. I'd look into the tuneup, plugs, wires, fuel and air filters etc. although it does seem odd that you do so well on the highway (I get 22-23).

Stop & go traffic ruins gas mileage. Canada has a cold climate for this time of year, so your intake air will be cold, and cause the computer to make the mixture rich. You might get better performance at the expense of fuel economy. You could contact WWW.HensonPerformance.Com for a new tune.

All of the gear lubes will also be high in viscosity because of the cold. It takes a long to get the front and rear differentials warmed up. This causes a lot of drag and will reduce gas mileage. If you are getting 20 to 22 highway mileage, I suspect your engine is working fine. The best I have ever gotten was 18 mpg but I usually average 15-16 mpg city. My problem is I can't keep my foot out of the go pedal on Interstates.

I never get less than 16-mpg on my 04, Level II. Its got a 4.0, 5-speed and 4.10 axle ratio. I suppose if I were to stand on the skinny pedal hard enough I might be able to get the MPG down in the single digits.

Sounds like it's not that far off, I get consistently about 10-14 or so...
