1997 SOHC 4.0 My idle is very poor and will die, hard to restart. Starts cold very well and runs great. New temp sensor idle valve ect... The most interesting thing is while driving the car runs great as long as the truck is moving it idles fine just under 1000 if I stop it starts to run rough and has poor idle. I put it in neutral and kept rolling and the idle stayed just under 1000, as soon as it stopped rolling the idle goes bad, Please help.

I had a similiar issue with my 97 Sport SOHC and it turned out to be the intake manifold gasket...

If no Check Engine Light is on, I would guess the Idle Air Control Valve is bad. Mine, though I have the OHV engine, did the exact same thing as your is. Never threw a code to make the light come on, but would not idle unless in Neutral and giving it gas. It is a very inexpensive part and takes 5 minutes to replace.

97 explorer poor idle

Thanks for the input. I have replaced the idle valve it did help some. I have replaced the intake o-rings on the top. However should I replace the lower. I checked for vacuum leaks and found none. Any chance that it may be the transmission torque converter? Any help is help. Thanks guys.
