A while ago I took my explorer off roading and was fine at first then I got stuck and while in 4x4 and having the wheels spinning I kept hearing a loud popping noise up front. When I finally got out and back on the street (explorer put in 2hi) I heard no popping noise. The noise even happens when I'm moving slowly and turning, what could be causing this??
Thanks to all who can help and sorry if I don't make any sense I'm very tired

If you have the auto hubs, that's a sign they are giving up.

Engaging 4x4 after you are already stuck is a sure fire way to break the auto hubs.

Check your axle rods on the front, I blew one of mine out and it made that noise.

It could be a hub issue but I'd be more inclined to look at the CV joints and then u-joints. CV joints are VERY prone to this particular noise.

Would definitely have to say hubs, especially if they are auto. My auto hubs did the same thing for a while. Then I replaced them with manual and the noises went away.

First gen Explorers do not have CV joints/axles

Will have to go with timtimtimajim on the hubs . I had the same popping sound . went to manuals & the sound went away .
