- 1998 ford explorer XLT
well i just got this explorer and it is a 1998 with 101,000 miles on it. And the tranny shifts perfect under normal driving. I can also slam on the gas from a dead stop and not have a proplem. But when i take off slow then slam on the gas or if i am just driving about 10 to 20 MPH and then kick it down when it shifts down (to first i think) it makes a clunk and then the RPMs go way up and then i let up off the gas and when the RPMs go back down it goes back into gear. Now the whole time the shifter still show it at drive and i never have to move the gear selecter after, it just goes back into gear when the RPMs die down. I tried it in 4x4 several times and it didn't pop out of gear but it still clunked really bad and my guess is if i tried a few more times it would of poped out but i didn't want to wreck any thing. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT
Thanks
