I'm over here from the Jeep side looking for 8.8 info for my swap and got to thinking about the D35

On the Jeep side, this is the ******* axle, and most of us want it gone(myself included)

However, it seems to do well in the IFS mode due to not having axle tubes..(I'm not Explorer smart, so please correct me if I'm wrong)

I noticed that some applications (EZ locker) have the same parts numbers between the Jeep rear, and the IFS front.

The Jeep boards are having a hard time getting rid of these sometimes, and end up giving or throwing them away.

If the parts ARE interchangeable, this is a potential goldmine.

Please advise me if they are, and I'll dig some up for y'all

A hard time getting rid of what, axles or lockers? If it's lockers, you might be on to something! :burnout:

axles, lockers, carriers, r/p's

as soon as I get my 8.8 in, I'll gladly pony up my EZ locker to the 'splorer crowd.

Now if I could only get some of y'all to pony up a detroit for CHEAP!

John

PS
If the IFS 35 is standard rotation, I think it might work....gotta get more info though.

EDIT:

The only thing I can find different is if there is abs involved. (jeep axles from 94 up.)

DET812A020-DETROIT E-Z LOCKER - DANA 35 FOR NON-ABS STYLE CASE
DET812A025-DETROIT E-Z LOCKER - DANA 35 FOR ABS STYLE CASE (94 & newer Jeeps ALL use this style regular case)

i think the part # for the powertrax lock right is the same for the IFS 35 and the rear 35 from jeeps as well. it is definitely something worth looking into for the explorer guys wanting front lockers that don't have them already.
the first gens have a real d35 up front. the 2nd gen explorers have a *******ized d35 up front (the IFS one) that is actually a Sterling Van Dyke 135. standard gears work, but not lockers. thanks for the tip GI_John. hopefully someone can take advantage of this and benefit both sides!

Ist gen Ex's (91-94) have reverse rotation gears.

I'd be interested in your EZ-locker, how much would you want for it? :)

I'm also looking for a locker for the dana 35. Where is 410fortune he usually has an answer.

Make me an offer I can't refuse and I'll pull it out this weekend.

I just want to make sure it will fit before selling it to anyone.

Thanks.

Not sure how much to say.... Um, how about.... $75?

[edit] Is this for an open carrier? If not then I can't use it in any case

I did some research on Powertrax' web site. They list the following units for Dana 35 rear axles:
92-0435-2705 - 1986-92 Comanche, 1990-93 XJ, TJ & YJ
92-0435-2706 - 1993-00 ZJ (front also), 1994-97 XJ, 1994-00 TJ & YJ
92-0435-2700 - 1984-89 XJ, 1987-89 TJ & YJ
92-0435-2725 - 1990-97 XJ, 1990-00 TJ & YJ, 1986-92 Comanche - Limited Slip
92-0435-2720 - 1984-89 XJ, 1987-89 TJ & YJ - Limited Slip

92-0435-2702 - 1995-00 Explorer - Front

Something must be different if there are different part numbers. But, I don't understand much about the Dana 35.

D.

What about the 91-94s? It was mentioned above that the 95+ are weird dana 35s, but as far as I know the 91-94s are.. Maybe that's a difference..

Ok, just checked the powertrax website for the lock-right.

First off, they list the 91-94 explorers as having dana 28s which isn't true (for the most part, some of the earliest may actually have one). The jeep dana 35s for the wranglers have the same part number as the 91-94 explorers (used a ranger dana 35 as a reference) up through '93. The 94+ Wranglers have the same part number as the 95+ explorers. I would venture a guess that other drop in lockers are the same, but not for sure.

[edit] - In the case of John's XJ, powertrax lists the same part number from '84-'93 as the '91-94' explorers.

So what's up GI-John? Up for a test? :)

dejello,

Sorry, I was being a Gen 2 snob, but Powertrax does not list anything for the 1991-94 front diff because they show it as a Dana 28, which you have already discovered. I'm curious to know what the differences are between the part numbers I listed.

Please post your results if you and GI-John have a test.

Thanks, Dave.

No biggie, it seems like the lockers for the "older" dana 35s on the jeeps will work on the '91-'94 ex's and the "newer" dana 35s on the jeeps will work with the '95+ explorers. I'm being a little vague here because my research consists of glancing at part numbers on the powertrax website and, with the different models of jeeps, there are sometimes different part numbers for the same year (something changed for that particular model at that time I guess). Just to be sure, I'm going to look for the ez-locker part numbers

If it involves pulling my locker before my axle swap, then probably no, (wheeling plans came up :D :D ) but I'll gladly help out after the swap. (being that if it doesnt fit, I'll refund the money and take it back.)(as long as it's not grenaded).

BTW I know the 75 offer was a shot in the dark for ya, but they go for more than that depending where you sell.

Ok. Just guessing and trying to get a deal since you said people've sometimes given these away or just plain trashed 'em. I've looked around a short bit online and seen them go for $100 up to $150 or so with the occasionally higher priced one. Tell me what your lowest price is and we'll see what happens :)

I guess I should have been more specific in that first post.

The axles, gears, shafts and carriers are the hardest to get rid of. Several buddies have tried in vain to sell these parts and ended up just putting them in the scrap pile. The lockers eventually sell, but sometimes it takes a while.

I'd be up for it a little later...(as soon as the 8.8 goes in) probably within the month. We'll talk via PM later about the locker.

John

Just re-read your second post in the thread and that's what you'd said, sorry about that. Okie dokie. I can't promise anything though because I'm looking for a locker pretty soon, so if you find a buyer before me, go for it. Got's a lil' trip coming up here soon that I'd like to be locked for :)

Hey hey, forgot to post back in here. John and I ended up working out a deal and I got the locker. Installed and tested it at Gilmer recently. The only issue I had with the locker was during the install. The c-clip for the axle shaft in the TTB actually clips on and doesn't fall off with a release of pressure on it (like the 8.8 does). I decided to clip the axle in place before putting that side of the locker in place completely for the ease of clipping it in. Also, the clip stuck out just barely too much and kept the spacer for the locker from going in right (pic attached). Other d35s may or may not have this issue. You can see that the spacer is not sitting right in that pic. I decided to grind down the edges of the clip to allow the spacer to fit. Be careful if you're doing this. If you grind too much, the clip could crack or break. I only took the minor offending sections off and left plenty of structure there. You may be able to install the locker easier with knowing the clip issue I had. It worked just fine at the Gilmer trip and I expect it to continue :) Thanks John!

I personally don't but if you check boards like
www.jeepsunlimited.com

www.naxja.org

and other jeep related forums they show up about once a week.

Just be patient and they'll drop in your lap for a song......right Dejello?

BTW, still looking for an 8.8 locker.
