hi. i'm thinking about trading in my 94 xlt 4wd in a year or so. i want to stick with 4x4, and suv's, and explorers, but i need something a little more reliable than mine (has 120+k miles and counting) to get me to and from college.

since there are rarely ever more than two people riding in my explorer at any time, i had thought about the sport. i absolutely love the way todd curtis' sport looks (in the featured explorers section). i hadn't planned on doing too much to it while still in college, but once i've graduated i plan on doing absolutely everything to it (when i get a good job of course).

what limitations are there, if any, to doing all the suspension / engine (intake/exhaust/performance) modifications to a sport compared to the 4 door models? i've looked around on 4wheelparts, and there seems to be some applications that are only for the 4 door trucks and not the 2 door, such as cat-back exhausts. thanks for any suggestions.

You can do basically anything with a sport as with a 4 door. Some years (like mine) came with monoleafs in the rear, thus need some extra mods for addaleafs or SOA, but no biggie. Performance-wise the only thing different is the length of the exhaust, but getting a custom setup is usually better and cheaper anyway. They also tend to be a bit quicker and nimbler due to less weight.

New Sport in your future?

If you're getting a new X Sport '01 on I can tell you that there are a lot of products out there, some are just not listed as fitting the new X Sports. But there are many kindred items on the 4 and 2 door rigs.

A Flowaster 70 series muffler is a great add-on and a KKM True-Rev induction kit will boost hp. Tornado or Vortex can supply an air optimizer and you can get a chip for performance. I also found a GREAT hitch that looks good and keeps the locals from tailgating.

Don't forget to find a wrecked X Sport (or FordPartsNetwork.com) and get the red and white Sport logo from the rear door. This goes on the front of the console tray below the heater controls. It's a nice touch:hammer:

I don't follow?

These are peel and stick "Sport" lapels from the rear hatch in the 01+. They arn't bolted or riveted in so you can stick them just about anywhere.

I like the sports because i beleive that a true SUV should onlt be 2 doors. Thats how they were invented and thats how i like them. the four doors just looks too station wagony to me. :redexp: aww they also look best red ;)

the year i was looking at was a '98 5.0L v8. hope i can convince my parents to let me get this one. i went with this year because it is kind of in between being older and being too new to cost too much... or something.

anyway, here's a list of what i could possibly get while still in college. any suggestions would be appreciated.

intake: k&n fipk, or kkm true-rev
exhaust: custom 2.5" catback w/ hi-flow cat, flowmaster muffler -- or a gibson full catback (w/ hi-flow cat still)
ignition: bosch +4 platinum plugs, jacobs electronics plug wires

wheels: american eagle 589 16"x10"
tires: bfgoodrich mud-terrain 33"x12.5"

body lift: trailmaster 3" body lift?

i decided i would need the lift to fit the bigger tires on it. about the trailmaster, on 4wheelparts there is no listing under trailmaster's 3" lift for the late model explorers. i'm not sure, but didn't someone say somewhere on this site that the ranger lift would fit the explorers?

again, any suggestions in general would be appreciated. all this will be bought while living on a college budget at the same time, so i'm still thinking about it :).

I've decided to keep my '94 xlt 4wd, for various reasons. One being it'll be just too hard for me to part with the first vehicle I've ever owned. Another being there's a wider selection of aftermarket parts available for the 94- years. Yet another reason being that the money that would be spent on a new vehicle could possibly be spent rebuilding this truck, from the ground up, every inch. Why not? It would be fun :).

I've already started building a list of things I would need. I want to keep it a daily driver, but I also want it to be pretty decently off-road worthy. I don't know if I'll get a suspension lift, since they cost a buttload, but maybe a 3" body lift won't be out of the question. One question I do have though, which part number for the Jacobs ignition wires on 4wheelparts is for the 94 XLT w/ the 4.0L V6? I'm kind of confused on that one... Thanks for the help :).

hey bluescat.. what are the sites you know for the 01 sport? like the rear hitch tailgating thing? can i get them.. i wana do some research on what i can do to a sport, and am interested in the things you know for the 01 sport

Flowmaster makes their "70 Series" muffler which imparts a resonant burble without being too loud. You can go to http://www.1800hitchit.com for the hitch. My round tube hitch was made by DaLan and I painted it an extra time before hanging it. You keep the ball on all the time to keep the tailgaters honest, HA.
Next get a true rev from KKM and put a Tornado optimizer in the throat of the beast as well. Also fashion a cold air chamber to surround your new S&B cone filter.
Get some good Jacobs wires and new plugs as required (as in different). Get Motorcraft Full Synthetic oil and AMSOIL filters. If you've got the dough get a superchip or diablo or whatever but be prepared to buy 93 Octane from the Arabs. Get rid of 75LBs by dumping the tube side steps and let her fly!

speaking about the side steps. my 94 has the factory running boards on it. i know if i remove them there won't be anything there, since i don't have the factory sideskirt that normally goes in its place. anyone know where i can get these for really cheap, or if i should consider an alternative to the sideskirt, such as a nerf bar? thanks.
