Hello!

I love my X, but ever since I bought it about 6 years ago, it's had a small issue. I bought it in the summer, and when I did, it's "check engine" light was on. The seller stated that it had been on for sometime, but he decided to ignore it as he noticed no difference in performance. Once the winter came, I figured out why it was on:

When the ambient temp is 40 degrees or less, cold starts act differently. It always starts no problem, but it always idles rough. Upon startup, it revs high; up to 3000 rpm, then drops to about 500 rpm, where it runs rough, misfires, etc. Then the anti-stall kicks in, and it revs back to 3000 rpm, and the cycle continues till it's warm. Sometimes the anti-stall doesn't catch, and it stalls. Then it can be a crank battle. The colder it is outside, the worse this problem shows up. I've found that if I put it in "drive" right after start up while keeping my foot on the brake, it stays at a level 1,500 rpm, then wants to idle and possibly die, so I give the accelerator a tap to keep it running. But, this is hard on the torque converter.

Anyway, this problem probably can't be solved through the forum, but I figured I'd see if anyone else has had this issue. I did have the "check engine" code pulled, which was "engine bank cylinders 1 & 3 running lean". It could be a vacuum line, I don't think it's fuel related, but it could be, maybe it's exhaust or an O2 sensor. I don't know. This problem never shows up in the summer, but I don't want to fight so much with it this coming winter. Any ideas?

Thanks Rod. I'm going to find and fix this problem! (but I don't wanna throw a bunch of money at it...)

+1 on what Dale said. It definitely sounds like your intake gaskets!!!

Definately intake gaskets, a fairly simple fix for the DIY'er.

So what does that require? Buying a new intake manifold? Being that it's made of plastic, I was suspicious. There is a gasket on the bottom of it which has some peaks and valleys, it didn't look right...

Anybody? Am I looking at buying a new manifold or what?

no just some rubber O rings for the lowers and middle gaskets, not sure of $ price but in UK complete set is about £36 ($45) from the ford dealer

No...you just need the intake gaskets. Read Dale's (StreetRod) response and click on the 00M12 thread in his favorites. It gives a good description of replacing the intake gaskets.

Damn. Ok, Dale's got a ton of info. I'm gonna dissect this sucker on Saturday. I'll be able to do some other standard maintenance as well. Thanks guys.

This thread is old, but I wanted to confirm the new intake gaskets FIXED THE PROBLEM!!! I had to wait for cold weather to see if the idling issue would return, but it hasn't. The engine runs fine after a cold start. Thanks again! :)
