Post what you are running as far as gears and tires for MPG and why. Is there such thing as an optimum combo? Does LSD "weigh down" or "drag" the driveline more than an open diff? My Mounty has 3.73 factory trac-lock with 33's but I think that truck is going to be strictly a weekend warrior. It used to get 18-20 with OEM 235/75/15, but now gets barely 12-15. I may just turn the Expy Limited into a daily driver/roadtrip warrior with it's 3.55 open and 225/70/15 (20-24mpg). Let's see what you are running!

Ford 2nd Gen Axle Codes:

43 = Open 3.08
41 = Open 3.27
42 = Open 4.10
46 = Open 3.73
45 = Open 3.55
D4 = Limited Slip 3.73
D2 = Limited Slip 4.10
L73 Limited Slip 3.73

96 XLT, 3:73 L/S 235/75/15's. Average all driving, 20MPG. Low of 18.4, high of 22.4. Missfire on #4, 14 MPG. Highest mileage from Flagstaff, Az to Cortez, Co was a bit over 25 MPG. That had to be a fluke I think, but that is what it figuered out to be using miles/ gallons. No onboard computer, which I wouldn't trust if I had one.

May I ask why? I totally believed mine from Miami, FL to Cape Coral, Fl (2.5 hrs). That's with $h!tty oil and needing a tune-up badly.

dont know what diff i have, but i have the 302. DD i get 18.5, best on highway is 21

For torqlox, because I have not seen an info center that was accurate. When I check fuel mileage, I want to know what it really is. Fuel used for miles driven. Of course if the pump is inaccurate, but I cant control that.

4.56, L/S rear, 33's. ~9mpg city, ~12mpg mixed city/hwy

if it's stock, 3.73 with L/S rear. I don't believe there were any other gear option for the 5.0's.

1998 4.0 OHV 170k 3.73 gears on 31x10.5 with addition roof rack

20 mpg @ 65mph

17mpg @ 75mph (most common)

my normal commute is 10 miles round trip no highway, stop and go each way, and I get about 13-14 mpg doing that.

99 5.0 AWD

LS 3.73 265/60R18

Best fuel mileage 21, avg highway mileage 19

with 1.5-2" suspension lift

'97 Mounty

- BW4406M
- 1" Phenolic Spacer
- K&N Filtercharger
- Henson Custom Tune
- stock suspension height
- no codes
- no mechanical problems
- regularly maintained
- 3:73 L/S
- 235/75/15's Michelin LTX M/S

Best City - 15 mpg Best Highway - 17 mpg

Same setup as above but with stock AWD system and 30 X 9.5 r15 BFG T/A KO's :

Best City - 17 mpg Best Highway - 21 mpg

4.56, L/S rear, 33's. ~9mpg city, ~12mpg mixed city/hwy

yep, bone stock

I know this is explorers but just thought I'd give my 2 cents - 4.10 open diff with 35s and I'm getting roughly 15/16 on the highway. (4.0 SOHC By the way)

Anything above 15mpg with knobby tires 33+ is good MPG IMO
