Hi folks,

I need to get some steel rims powder coated. Also, would anyone recommand painting the rims over powder coating them...if so why?

I have never had anything powder coated. Any tips on what to ask about while I'm checking out shops?

Anyone have some experience with shops in the Denver Area?

thanks,

I'ts a little expensive , we have a place here in Pueblo . Each wheel is around $35 and you have to pay to sand blast them . You can buy new wheels in Black or white for about the same price . The advantage is that it is a very stong finish . It's resists scrathces , pits , etc. like no other paint . Color choices are endless you can even anodize . Hope this helps , Rand .

Joe, I know you have to have whatever your powder coating sand blasted. Most places will do that for you also.

Only thing I have had done is my steps and that was done in Berthoud.

Thanks folks,

My rims will come new unfinished or raw. I order them from Stockton Wheel. I'm hoping that it does not cost too much to have them power coated. Stockton said they will arrive ready to powder coat.

:)

you don't have to sandblast to powdercoat things..only if there is already paint or another finish on there. you can use liquid solvents that eat the finish instead of sandblasting too. sounds like your rims won't have any finish on them...so no need to prep them. we run our powdercoater at work almost 24/7, but the sandblaster is rarely used. there are some really neat things you can put in the paint to add to it. we add a silicone compound in for some applications and the result is a very slick paint that is super easy to clean.

I just made a bumper and have some grinded the welds which lefts scratches and cracks. Would powdercoating cover all this up or will i see it still?

it will cover up scratching but probably not any deep grinding marks. as far as cracks goes.. do you mean the metal cracked? or like spaces between two pieces of metal? it probably won't cover these "cracks" up effieciently but it will help. of course it depends on how big the cracks are. if they are big, i would take it to an experienced welder and let him/her fill in the cracks then get it coated.

Consider Paint on Bumper

SCEXPLORER,

You might want to consider paint on your bumper. That is if you go off road. I have a custom rear bumper and I went with paint. The reason is you will tend to scuff the bumper when 4wheeling. It is real easy to touch up the scuffs and scrapes with paint.

Would it be ok if I put primer before I get it powdercoated?

no
