I have a reacuring problem with engine surging then stalling. Today it did it all the way f-ing home!! As always, when i pop the hood there is a clicking noise coming from the "power distribution box". I have already pulled out and checked the fuses, and all looked ok. I also cleaned everything with electrical cleaner (prongs/connections and box itself). It went away for a while and i thought that was it, until today!!

Has ANYBODY had this problem on a first gen X before?? Needless to say its driving me CRAZY!!, (or should i say crazyer, lol) Is there anything else that i can do as far as self maintenance?

Anyway, any help or suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated!

Remeber, on a 91-92, there are more relays UNDER the box....check those. Maybe the fuel pump relay is quitting on you.

Crank is right. It's gotta be the relays.

UnDER the box????

Can you give more detail on this: "Under the box" ?? Does this apply to a 94 at all??

Ditto...if they are under the PD box, how do you get to them??

I did go to Napa today and they showed me a "fuel pump relay". It is not even in the box, but just down from it on the fire wall. They said it was $23.00, i may try that.

The relays under the box can be acessed by lifting the box up. On 93-94's, the relays are in the main box up top.

Check grounds, power, and the EEC relay too.

Could you please tell me where the fuel pump relay is located?? I THINK it is the thing on the fire wall, not to far from the power distribution box. I just want to be sure before i go replacing the wrong thing!

This problem is REALLY getting me down, got to get it resolved ASAP!! BTW...i did notice that it seems to only act up after i've been driving for a while (motor hot), if that means anything??

Thanks Crankcase, River Rat, and everybody else for your help.

Ok Ill try!

Remove your air filter box. Then when it is out. Look under the fuse area of the power distribution box. On your vehicle there will be three relays. fuel relay,EEC,and if you have an automatic a selinoid relay. reach under the part were you checked the fuses they are mounted upside down . once you find it you will say duhh!! As for the folks who told you the fuel pump relay was on the firewall..... well you know what to tell them.

Thanks...btw, what does "EEC stand for??

Electronic Engine Control AKA the computer that runs things.....

Last question on this matter

I SWEAR!!

This "ECC" and "Fuel Relay" (i actually saw them today, why they put them there is beyond me) anyway..is it as simple as unplug the old and plug in the new? Are they labled as such? Would you know about how much they cost? I really dont feel like taking half the engine apart just to get to them, but then again i'm REALLY tired of stalling in the middle of intersections!!

Again, thanks for your help.

If you go to an automotive store you are looking at $10-$30 for each relay.

If you go to an electronics store (I don't mean radio shack) they are $3-$10 each.. The only issue with getting them from an electronics store is that some have a plastic mouting part on the top that would make it not fit where the old one was.. I've also seen them without this piece of plastic.. and some have metal mounting tabs that can be bent or removed..

Mark,

Are there any electronic stores other than Radio Shack??? I hate that place and the standard "Why do you need that?" or "If it's not on the shelf we don't have it" or "I think it will work" responses drive me insane.

Are there such a thing as good electronic stores in the NY area????

Umm.. in NY, I don't know... but here the place I go to is a place that everything still has dust on it..

heck, I bet I could even find a flux capacitor in there.. and if they don't have it on the shelf, they can order just about anything.. (I needed a solid state relay that could switch 120 a/c and handle 10 amps.. and they had no problem ordering it for me..)

Ham Radio guys are the kind of people that would use that kind of a electronics store.. ask the "true geeks" around where they go to buy individual resistors, hobbey cases, transistors etc.. thats where you want to go.

Hey Maniak

spta97 Has good intensions I,m sure. But the relays are common and cheep. The last one I purchased<yesterday at autozone> was $6.50. Your wasting your time trying to save 2$ thru a bulk distributer.

Wow, autozone wanted $30 for the one on the neon, and I think it was $15 for the fuel pump one on the explorer..

If they $6.50 each at autozone there.. by all means get them..

I just couldn't justify spending $50+ in relays (if one goes, I replace them all while I"m there.. and keep the old good ones as a spare)..
