So I know many of you may have Been following my issues with my explorer on other threads I have posted. Most recently though, I need to chase down an issue that seems to have been on going. I seems that the truck has issue with power and seems like it is taking the motor everything it has to get to speed...especially uphill. Other times it seems fine. Having said this, I noticed that it could be happening more when the a/c is on.....is there potential for any correlation with the a/c and the power issue?

I'm having the same problem with my 96 OHV 4.0 Also, with the a/c on, the motor will just shut off going down the highway, have to pull over, starts right up, then it'll be fine for a few more miles then shut off again. Can anyone help us?

Takes a lot of ponies to run the AC compressor,I would say you have another problem if you are loosing power.:D

I have changed many parts and spent many dollars..... I am at my wits end! I really cannot tell you what is going on. If someone could go back and look at my previous thread I would appreciate it. I am thinking it may be an injector or fuel pump thing, but really know no easy way to test.....please help!

Turns out all my problems were caused by a bad fuel pump. I've had 3 installed over the past year and a half, first 2 were Airtex brand pumps, worst pumps made (google this brand pump, read the reviews). Last time I had a Bosch installed, no problems so far, everything is back to normal, engine running fine, powere restored.

thank you for this info ,i too am starting to have problems with my fuel pump on long runs with the a/c on .one auto part seller told me they had alot of problems with the airtex brand pumps and they no longer carry them .they now offer a reman oem pump instead thats an exact pump from your vehicle so everything plugs in fine and lines right up .
national auto is selling those .

Out of curiosity, did you change just the pump or the sending unit and the carrier and everything? I was thinking about doing that, but it is a large price difference. If I can get away with just the pump, I will do that.

Does the sending unit usually need tobe replaced or are the pretty reliable?

Any advice

Question about the fuel coming out of the fuel filters inlet side...

Is the fuel clear or does it have a slight to extreme rusty/dirty look to it? I fought this issue for a number of months before I just changed the tank thanks to rust inside of it...

I have an electric fuel pressure gauge on the A-pillar and I can monitor the fuel pressure real-time...I could see when the filter was getting clogged up and/or when the pump was dying...And since I have a returnless fuel system the pressure is not supposed to change throughout its operational cycle...

I have had pumpd die completely and I have had pumps drop to 20 psi output suddenly...I have replaced the pump and kept the regulator and sending unit when I have replaced the pump... The last time I had a pump die[actually drop to 20 psi] I used another sending unit thanks to the ground wire being charred and the connector to the pump being melted...

I was very surprised when I found this...The new pump had been in the new tank[replaced both at the same time] for 3.5 months before it died...I couldn't blame it on rust or dirt in the tank since the tank was clean inside this time...

I think I am just going to get a new pump....more cost manageable. When I drop the tank and take the pump oout, I am going to look at the tank...if the tank is really rusted, I am going to replace that. Try to get this thing up and running right again.

I am still confused on the whole sending unit thing....is it something that typically does not fail??? can I get away with a new Bosch pump and use the old sending unit?

My guess is that the tank is pretty rusty... since the last 2 times I changed my fuel filter, the fuel was nasty...very coffee colored.

Oh well, we shall see, but always welcome info on the subject.

Thank you

The sending unit seems to last longer than the pumps do...

My sending units are not affected by the rust in the tank...The pumps are since the "filter" on the pump lets that nasty rusty crap through itself and the pump...These pumps really do not like pumping solids...

And this is what I found when I pulled the filter and finally pulled the tank for the last time... If your fuel looked like this it is coming from the tank insides...Not bad fuel from the local gas station, not a prank that the neighborhood kid pulled on you...This tank had been boiled out by a radiator shop and cleaned and lined by POR-15 gas tank liner...

And yes I thought my issues were from a load of bad gas and/or someone dropping dirt into my tank...

Is the tank pictured after the lining or prior to? Do you recommend just getting a new tank or having my old one lined?

Unfortunately that pic is after the liner was poured in...

I even bought a second used tank thinking that surely it wouldn't be bad too.. I was wrong...The liner I used I have seen do some amazing stuff but with our metal tanks there are so many bends and curves inside the tank that the liner apparently didn'tcover all of it and the rust actually formed on top of the liner after about 3 months...

After throwing away $75 for a used tank, $80 for the radiator shop cleanout twicw, $50 for the liner that didn't work I wished I had just bought a new tank in the beginning and not had to deal with this mess..

I bought this truck after it had sat for over 2 years with a half tank of gas in it... Actually it was more like varnish and rust...I had a dead fuel pump initially as well and by replacing the pump in the old tank even after cleaning it out I started a 3-4 month cycle of replacing fuel filters and dead pumps that finally ended when I bought a new clean fuel tank..

Hope you have a 4 door X since their tanks are a lot cheaper and more plentiful than the Sport tank...And they are still metal...:(

Look at the difference...Old tank vs new tank.........

well here is a kicker for you....spent most of the day taking out the fuel tank out of the truck....pulled out the pump and looked in.....WOW!!! the tank has no rust and the fuel is clean as clean can be....only thing really noticed was that the screen at the bottom looked kind of black throughout....guessing it is clogged.

For the sake of it, I am going to take out the pump and replace it with a new one. Additionally, I will be reusing the tank. Rusted and such on the out side, but CLEAN inside. I am not counting on anything, but I think I am pretty much not going to get much of a result....which leads me to believe I am looking at the next step of bad injector somewhere.

Who knows, but we will see.

Welcoming thoughts

Sndsational- what ended up being your end result here? Did it end up being a bad injector?
