I'm not sure about aftermarket but my V8 came with one from the factory. It mounts in front of the steering gear and is about 12" long and 2-3" wide. I'm not sure if it helps but I do know that my 98 is virtually silent compared to my 92's pump that whined like a **** all the time.
I put a cooler on my '93. I installed a PermaCool unit - very happy with it.
I interrupted the return line to install the cooler. From the steering box, to the cooler, to the base of the pump. Do not put one on the high pressure side of the system.
I have no idea how much cooler it keeps the fluid, but the whine is almost non-existent.
So, installing a PS cooler gets rid of the whine? I HATE THAT WHINE!!!! It drives me nuts. You can tell there is a Ford in a parking lot whenever you hear that whine too. Anyways, how much was it, how hard was it to install, and any pics of the install?
I installed a 7x4 beheind the grill to prevent the fluid from burning. The 35s and front locker put a lot of stress on the power system so I added the unit to add capacity and to help keep the fluid cooler. It does help but it didnt remove the Whine in my case.:redexp:
My C-II pump didn't have a cooler. The C-III in the Exploder does have one by the steering rack but it was damaged so i installed a permacool on the lower condesner support braket.
Yes you can. I did when I changed mine the last time. It made noise when turning at low speeds; mostly parking. It went away after a couple days.
There's techniques for removing (most of) the air, but I haven't bothered. Once air enters the system, the fluid tends to foam, and it takes a while for the foam bubbles to dissapate.
To get the air out jack up the front end and put it on jackstands, then turn the wheel from lock to lock back and forth several times to work out the bubbles.
