I have finally got to the bottom of a problem I've had with shredded drivebelts on my 4.0L SOHC V6 Explorer.

After a new belt shredded last night after just a few days running, I found there was excessive play in the power steering pulley.

On inspection after removing the pulley, I find that the mounting bracket had only two fixing holes - one had clearly broken off some long time ago and the power steering pump had been hanging on just two bolts, one of which was not an original and was only finger tight.

It looks like I need a replacement mounting bracket - that's a hefty chunk of aluminium - and possibly a replacement power steering pump too.

After being quoted around £600.00 for a new pump from a Ford Dealer, I've located a supplier for a manufacturer-rebuilt pump for a reasonable £137.00.

Having trouble finding a replacement mounting bracket, though. Can anyone please help me out with a source for this model's power steering pump mounting bracket, hopefully at a reasonable price?

All advice and decent suggestions gratefully received.

Best wishes

Mike

Sincere thanks to 'onetime' and 'chrisquelch' for trying to help me with this issue.

Thankfully, I've now been able to contact Justin Woodham of explorerpartsuk (check him out on eBay) and it looks like my problem will soon be solved.

This website is a boon to any and all Explorer owners, so sincere thanks to all concerned with making it available to us.

Best wishes

Oh dear. Justin let me down completely. He promised to send me the part and then I heard nothing.

I ended up getting the mounting bracket by next day courier from a wrecker. The part is now fitted and all is together again.

The car is running well but I've noticed that I get a groaning noise and a slight juddering in the steering when turning to the right. It is smooth as silk when turning left. Happens at about a quarter right lock only. There does not seem to be a mechanical problem and the steering doesn't seem affected badly in that she steers as she should apart from the noise and a slight juddering until straightening up.

I suspect this may be caused by air in the power steering system - I did have to drain it and refill when fitting the bracket and remounting the pump. Can anyone with better knowledge and experience than me confirm my suspicions? Alternatively, any other possible causes?

Regards

Mike

Hello, sorry to here about your troubles i owned a p38 range rover before the X so am used to the stress of car trouble , that was a while ago the the X is far better car really. I had a bad noise from the the driver side when my upper control arm was bad so might be worth a check.
cheers

I had the same juddering on one side only, tried everything including bleeding etc. if you take the bollows off you can see the rack shuddering. In the end I had to replace the rack.

Once off the car and free of mechanical constraints you could feel the binding that caused the juddering when moved by hand - internal mechanical problems in the rack.

If you want a quick but not a long term fix

cheers Jim

BTW the jeep forum is far less fun that this one!
