Im wondering how long it took some of you to do the install of one of the drop in lockers. I am going to put my Power Traxx No-Slip in my 8.8 tomorrow afternoon while my son is in preschool and before my wife gets home from work.

Im thinking it should take no more than an hour , maybe hour and a half. Am i realistic? What should I look out for? Any tips?

TIA

It took me 2 1/2 hours to put mine in. But that is because after I put it in I had to take the whole damn thing apart b/c I forgot to put a washer in! It's a piece of cake.

HIX, you have a Powertrax NoSlip? I thought Khoa was the only one so far. Mine's going in next weekend (now that you convinced me on that other thread not to worry about how I had such a bad time on the street with the Detroit and a locker on a daily driver is okay).

$406. Ka-ching~ ! This is all your fault. :p

Gerald,

Where did you get your locker? DId you call West Coast Diffs? They were 100 bucks cheaper than anyone else. I had the locker in my old Exploder sport. I am not putting it in my B-4000 till Feb.

Hey don't blame me!!! I hope it lives up to all the hype I gave it!

Yep. WCD had the best price by far.

Gerald,
I wished you would have told me. We could have gone together and seen if we could get a better deal. I plan on adding one to the rear sometime next month.

I am not sure it would have made any difference. I did a LOT of shopping, called in a couple of markers from the '99 SEMA show, and prodded Rick for help too. WCD gave the best price anyway. They've got the best deal right now by far.

O.K. So what is the price???????
Do you have a number I can call them????

Check your email. You got even a better price than I did.

Not good news - not as bad as it could be but..

Well started at 11:15 anfd it is 12now, got all of the old stuff out.
Big problem- the pinion shaft lock bolt broke off inside the carrier!!!! Took me the last 45 min to get it out. The bolt gbroke on the second thread from the shaft and was almost out when the head and threads came out but the pin part didnt. I used a magnet and a punch to slowly rotate the pin out. What a pain.

Everything else seems to be ok. I would recommend anyone who is going to do this install get a new cross shaft bolt. I wont hurt to put a new one in.

So on my recommendation above Im off to the parts store.

Did we catch the locker virus at our last run in the GWNF??

My EZ-Locker will get installed tomorrow! I take the whimpy way though and have a shop doing it. I guess we should start thinking about the next run for testing our toys ...

Locker Virus

Michael, Ive had the Locker Virus before we went to GWNF. Just now treating it!!!

The install is really easy. Hardest part of the whole thing(exceptting the broken bolt) was cleaning the cover and getting the diff fluid back in. Took me another 2 hours to install and finish up- this included some time on the phone with my broker( not a good day as many may know). So I would say that 1 1/2 hours for an actual install with no broken bolts or phone calls is about right.

Took it for a short on-road drive. Nice Quiet. Driveline had a bit more backlash, but much less of an increase than I expected. A couple of clicks on sharp turns (u's) which I would assume get quieter during break-in. Im going to drive it around town for a while, and take it out for an off road test this weekend. So far so good, Im pleased.

Michael- Im still looking Jan-Feb sometime for a return to the GWNF. Once I figue a date Ill get a thread going for all who want to go.

Wish I were you

Steve; did you have the Limited slip (limited grip) diff?
Is installing the locker more invalve with the L/S than an open diff? My L/S still works well unless I get a wheel in the air.

rocky

I installed the No-Slip into an open carrier.
I would say that putting one in a Limited Slip case would be more involved- but I dont know what the differences are. I dont even know if Power traxx has a No-Slip that can use the Trac LoK case. If there is a model to fit that case I would assume it would be very similar to my install except that there would be more "stuff"( ie clutches, spring) to remove from the case before installing the new unit. But I havnt done one so dont really know and am just speculating.

If I remember the no-slip will fit either a open or LS.
That was one of the nice things about it.

Ok, so I can't help this..

How do you spell locker?

detroit!

:-)

Ok, so the really cool thing about a locker in the rear, was I was doing stuff in 2wheel drive in DeathValley that 4wheel drives had some trouble with (until I hit deep sand..).

The No-Slip can be installed in either an open or Trac-Loc diffy. However, there are two different models and part numbers of No-Slip depending on whether you install it in an open or Trac-Loc. I believe the No-Slip for the Trac-Loc is about $20 more that the one for an open. I'll find out tomorrow when I order mine.

Detroit V's PowerTrax

SteveVB,
What gears do you have in your truck?
I have heard if you run 4.56 gears you have to modify the ring gear.
I talked to my 4x4 shop and he didn't think you should have to, but he has never put one in.
I won't get mine in as fast as Gerald, so maybe he will be able to help also after his is in.

tdavis, I know I talked to you about the locker and I really thought of a Detroit, but since I will do more highway driving I am hoping this one is better. It has a 2 year warrenty, so we will see. I have e-mailed a couple of guys that have them in there Cherokee's and they say they really like them.

Perry I still have my 3.55's. I am not going to change my gears until I add larger tires- maybe next year. I went with a drop in locker since Im not changing gears.

As far as having to grind the gear set, I doubt it. Even with a wider ring gear there should still be enough room to put the pieces into the case. The only problem that I could think of would be the pinion shaft. It may have to be ground to get by the gear- I think HIX had the No-Slip with some 4.56's if I remember correctly. HIX can you enlighten us???

Sorry Guys,

I had 3.55s in w/ 33s and the locker. I burnt alot of clutch! One thing, the cross shaft OR the ring gear has to be modified. This modification has to be done if you go up to 4.56 gears. The locker doesn't have anything to do w/ it. You can buy the modified cross shaft from Randy's Ring and Pinion for 35 bucks. The guys at powertrax told me when I bought the locker that it would fit all available gearsets.
