Is the PCM, Powertrain Control Module, the same thing as the vehicle's computer, or is the "computer" something different? I'm fairly sure that the computer is the thing mounted in the firewall in the engine compartment on the passenger side w/ the major harness going to it.....is that also the PCM? Thanks.

Yes, PCM = Powertrain Control Module = engine control computer. On the Gen 2 Explorers it is mounted on the engine side of the firewall.

There are also a couple of other "puters" in the Explorer, namely the GEM = Generic Electronic Module - controls 4wd and other "body" functions like power windows and locks ,the SRS computer and the ABS computer.

Hey do any of you have photos of its location? Also, is it a replacement fix you can do yourself? Ty!
