Premium Sound System with 9 Speakers?

Hello Sixonemale,

To clarify, did you mean “Group 202B” for your inquiry? If so, I’ll be happy to look into this for you. :)

Tricia

Hi Tricia,

I meant the "Equipment Group 202A" on a 2015 Ford Explorer XLT. I believe
what was stated before is correct:

Premium Plus 9 Speak 100W
-2x Door Handle Tweeter 25W 80hms (Size: 1")
-2x Front Door Fe Midwoofer 25W 40hms (Size: 6x9")
-2x Rear Door Fe Full Range 25W 40hms (Size: 6.5")
-2x 3rd Row Fe Midrange 25W 160hms (Size: 80mm)
-1x IP Center Channel Fe 25W 80hms (Size: 80mm)

But having this verified would be helpful. Unfortunately this is my only source to get this information, Ford Parts could not look it up and I could not find it anywhere else.

Thanks

Tricia, It's been a week, any update on your research? I think this should be standard information that available. Thanks

Hi Sixonemale,

Tricia is currently out of the office. I'm Todd, and I'm helping out on her various forums wherever possible. I'm going to look into Tricia's research. Can you please PM your VIN? This will expedite the process.

Thank you for your patience.

Todd

Does anyone have details on the type and number of outputs coming out of the factory radio on a non-Sony, Premium 9-speaker system 2016 Explorer XLT (with 202A package, MyFord Touch with Sync)?
Specifically, are the outputs feeding full-range signal to each of the 9 speakers? Are there in-line passive cross-overs between the radio and the speaker? Has the signal been actively/electronically crossed-over by the amp built-in to the receiver?
Do bluetooth calls & navigation prompts pass audio through to only specific speakers?
How many actual outputs are there?

I'm trying to decide on the best option for a pre-amp/DSP/OEM integration piece.
Right now I'm leaning towards an Audio Control DQ-61....but it really depends on the number of inputs I need to deal with and whether or not they are full-range.

What I cannot understand is that when I asked for verification of my speaker sizes in a 2015 XLT with the Equipment Group 202A package, which looks like it was posted before on this thread by a moderator, why it cannot be verified again or changed.

One thing the system lacks is a loudness switch.

Hi All,

I have a 2014 XLT with premium 9 speakers sound system and I would like to upgrade my front, rear and dash speakers to aftermarket.

My question is : does anyone know the max size I can go for ?

I was looking at 6x9 for front and 6.5 for the rear but I want to make sure it will fit.

Thanks in advance for your inputs on that.

I have the same question.

Thanks in advance for all answers.

I have merged your thread with this existing one. Check out post 41.

In summary, calling the Ford parts department and working with the moderator, in addition to giving them my VIN and other information, Ford could not verify the size of my speakers in this package.

Because I thought the sound was sub par to say the least of the premium sound system I took the leap to make some changes. First off I now know these are the correct speaker sizes:

-2x Door Handle Tweeter 25W 80hms (Size: 1")
-2x Front Door Fe Midwoofer 25W 40hms (Size: 6x9")
-2x Rear Door Fe Full Range 25W 40hms (Size: 6.5")
-2x 3rd Row Fe Midrange 25W 160hms (Size: 80mm)
-1x IP Center Channel Fe 25W 80hms (Size: 80mm)

I did not verify the third row speaker size, but more than likely it is accurate because all of the other speaker sizes are accurate.

I ended buying a high end component package and replaced the 6x9's in the front door, in addition to the 1" tweeters and with trepidation added 2" mid range tweeters in the pillars and lastly put crossovers in both doors. Surprisingly the 2" mid range tweeters look like they were put in by the factory and look fantastic. I also put in an attenuater for the center front speaker on the dash because it was not balanced and took a slight bit of tweaking on the volume, very easily done and inexpensive. The overall sound quality is MUCH, MUCH better with full sound at low volumes, great tight bass without a subwoofer or amp installed. The speakers that were installed are very efficient and now make driving very pleasurable on both short and especially long trips.

Can I assume the 2016 XLT "Premium" speakers are the same as 2015? I'm kind of disappointed reading this. No subwoofer? Why wouldn't they even offer an upgraded decent system?

I've attached a photo of my passenger door showing the "premium" sound system speakers that came with the "equipment group 202a package", in addition to the 2” midrange tweeters that I had installed on the front pillars. If your doors and speaker locations look similar to the attached photos, I believe it would be fairly safe assume that the speaker sizes are the same as listed above. With that said, the door panels are fairly easy to remove to do a quick check. As previously mentioned, I replaced the front door 6x9's, 1" tweeters, added 2" midrange tweeters to each pillar, and put a crossover in each door for much improved sound.

Can you explain about the Ohms you has used? Is very hard to find a 16Ohms Speakers...

Can you explain about the Ohms you has used? Is very hard to find a 16Ohms Speakers...

I did a lot of research and spoke to a few very experienced auto stereo installers and most importantly I listened to what they thought was good sound. What most auto stereo shops think is good sound was not what I thought was good sound. Most shops like a lot of bass and almost artificial sound, far different than what I was looking for. I finally found installer who knew exactly what I looking for in regard to what I defined as good sound. I played the stereo from our other car, a Lexus with a Mark Levinson stereo system and said that was the sound that I am reaching for and he liked the sound and knew exactly what type of speakers that I would like, etc. Almost all installers said that replacing the second and third row speakers would not make a difference to what I or my passenger would hear in the front row while driving and now after the fact I completely agree.

So, to your specific question I did not replace second or third row speakers, so trying to find 16 ohm speakers never came into play.

I took his post to read 16 Ohm not 160 Ohm. Hard to tell for sure since he, like you in your post, didn't leave a space between the number and the word Ohms.;)

It's early, you are correct, 16 ohms.

It really depends how many people you will be driving around as to whether or not you replace the 2nd and 3rd row speakers. My guess is that if you do replace the 2nd and 3rd row speakers you may need to add an amplifier. I tried adding an amplifier and the sound quality degraded and sounded like what most stereo shops install, so I took it out and it sounds great with plenty of volume without an amp.

You are correct it is difficult to find 8 ohm tweeters, though I can't be positive the OEM tweeters are 8 ohms because that is what I cut and pasted from this thread and was most concerned about the size of speakers. I put in 4 ohm tweeters, both the 1" tweeters in the door and the additional 2" mid range tweeters. That may also be the reason the center speaker seemed a bit louder after changing the speakers out. After watching the installer take apart the door and center council it was easy for me to slightly turn down the center speaker volume with a very inexpensive attenuator and to adjust the crossovers in each door to my liking. In summary it was a simple process that really increased the quality of the sound system which now compares to the Mark Levinson system in our Lexus.
