'92 EXPLORER XLT OFF ROAD
Hello!
I have a '92 XLT, when i engage it to D there is a heavy sound coming out from the transmission. Sounds like it is hit by a sledge hammer as the gears engage, but if i warm up the engine to atleast 30 mins it engages to D so smooth. In R no problem even the engine is cold. Is this sign has something to do with the band adjustment? I bought a new torque wrench the other day for this job. This tranny was overhauled 3 mos ago, but feels like i met the wrong mechanic, so i did not bring back my truck there. Any help would benefit more bigginers like me. Thanks!

Thank you brooklynBay! I've changed new ATF and filter yesterday, but it didn't solved the problem. An hour ago i tried adjusting the band base on your writings, the worst thing is when i insert the torque wrench to the socket holding the adjusting bolt, there is no enough space, cannot fit the torque wrench with the socket to the bolt. My socket is 1/2" drive and my torque wrench is 1/4" drive, so i used adapter which makes it longer. Huh! I i will tight these bolts with bare hand using the 9mm combination spanner, do you think my pull will exceed the required torque which is 10 ft-lbs? This is just temporary til i find the socket with 1/4" drive. Thanks!

Sorry, I tried pulling the 10 ft-lbs on the torque wrench using a 9 mm combination spanner with my bare hand, it didn't 'clik' meaning my pull didn't reach 10 ft-lbs.. I'm ignorant!

I have only 9mm - 3/8" drive socket and 3/8" drive torque wrench which has a range from 11.1 ft-lbs to 62.7 ft-lbs (Major scale). No adapter this time. This is my first time to use a torque wrench. I set the torque to 11.1 ft-lbs then turned the handle 1 ft-lbs (minor scale) counter clockwise, so i have now 10.1 ft-lbs. I hope I am correct, now, lets crawl under the truck and hope this will give good result. But this time i cannot test the truck yet because yesterday as i fill the tank full i noticed/hear a sound like an electric motor vibrating somewhere near the gas tank, that was the second time i heard that sound when have full tank. Then after about two km, the engine stop and never start again. I got home by a tow truck. Sorry this maybe another thread.
