problem with 4 x 4

i have recently bought a wrecked xl 4 x 4 i replaced the frame and corrected the body damage. after getting it all back together, i have encountered another problem with which i have no idea what to do. when engaging the four wheel drive i can hear it pop in and the front wheels do pull but there is a grinding noise and popping.was wondering what this might be.

Congrats on bringing one back from the dead! Maybe hubs?

it sounds as though it isnt the hubs but maybe the differential or the transfer case but dont know how to be sure

Is it making the noise in 4Auto, 4Low or both? Did you check the fluid level in the transfer case?

If it is just making noise in 4Low, some noise is normal. Just DO NOT USE 4Low on pavement or hard pack surface if at all possible. You will cause serious stress damage to the driveline if you do for too long.
