Have '06 explorer 2wd. Needed new rear pads and changed them with no problems. Did not turn the rotors. Was not having any problems with the rotors. Next day begin hearing a low rubbing sound from the driver's side rear wheel. It has gotten louder. It only occurs at low speeds, stops when the brakes are applied and will stop for a bit when the vehicle is backed up and brakes are applied 4 or 5 times. I have looked back at the install, re-lubed the slides but with real change. I also noticed on re-exam, when the vehicle was up on stands, the noise did not occur when it was in gear and the wheels were turning. It stops fine and there is no noise above 20mph or so. Any thoughts or ideas.

When I did mine I had a noise like the pad was rubbing on the rotor and I fixed it by putting a little slide grease inside the caliper piston where the three clip pins go. I got that advice from my friends dad who is a mechanic. This was only happening on the drivers side but I did both just I case.

I struggled with the EXACT issue for weeks, except my rotor was getting smoking hot. Opened the caliper and replaced the square cut seal, new bracket, slide pins, and hoses, etc. No fix. Ended up replacing the caliper with a NAPA Total Eclipse semi loaded for less than I spent on the other parts. There was no evidence of a sticking piston, and the walls were perfectly smooth. Go figure.

The position of the rear pad double notches has been addressed before with no explanation. The notches are often installed on the bottom with no issues. The Ford manual specifies to install the pads with the notches on top. This probably has no effect on your noise, just an FYI.

NOTE: When installed, the locator notch on the brake pads will be located at the upper end of the rear disc brake caliper.

I don't even mess with doing the pads only anymore. Brake parts are cheap enough to replace rotors and pads together. Just did my rears and got a rotor and ceramic pad kit from Rockauto for less than $100.
