I bought a few tools the other day so i can start work on my 1992 explorer, i was almost going to sell it for the loan amount the other day but I've decided to at least keep it until i pay it off, maybe fix it up all nice and tidy, then decide weather or not i wish to keep it or not.

First problem i fixed was the coolant issue, i guess some oil had gotten on the hose between the radiator and the reservoir, and it completely came off squirting the contents all over the road. *oops*

i bought some hose clamps and fastened it on again, the hose has no leaks and its on there pretty tight, so i guess that can be makred off the list.

other than that, i still had to get to the bottom of my accelerator sticking, shortly after looking down there I realized that the FLOOR MAT was the culprit. *sigh* (yes, i feel like a total idiot)

Then of course i needed to fix a few small cosmetic details, i filled a small star shaped crack in my windshield with some resin, changed the front wiper blades, etc

theres still a few more things on the list, but im stuck on this one... So i was under the hood with a voltage checker and the motor for my windshield wipers, everything there looked good.

next i went under the dash to the fuses and noticed all kinds of butt splices, i turned the car on and wiggled the wires and sure enough all kinds of nasty interference came through the speakers....

long story short i think my wipers only working on high and my stereo system problem are hand in hand, there has to be a short in the system somewhere. Now, i dont have a diagram on hand, but i found a number 10 fuse fried, so i replaced it BAM fried on impact (the car wasn't on at this time btw) i tried it one more time, fried that one to.

I think the last owner had tapped into the wrong ground wire or something. which im still not 100% sure of but it sounds logical to me... so my next step i think is trying to redo all those wires and connection down there, make sure they're going to all the right places, and maybe make the splices more clean.

Does anyone have a PDF file of the diagram on hand they could email me or know if theres one somewhere online? I've tried google but im not pulling up anything useful, just a few people asking the same question... Where can i get a first gen explorer fuse box diagram?

If you've got the owner's manual, there's a diagram in there. I have the service manual, but it starts with '93. I don't know if they changed anything between '92 and '93. The following info is for a '93

My truck had the worst aftermarket wiring ever (anti-theft and remote start). It didn't even work because it hung out from under the dash so much it got ripped up from stepping on the brakes. Never let one of those stereo shops get near your truck. Its scary what some people will pass off as wiring. Crimp connectors have no place anywhere in a vehicle, under the hood they corrode, under the dash they work loose. Electrical tape shrivels up and falls off. Solder and shrinkwrap is the only way to do wiring right.

At least with factory wiring everything has different colors and it shouldn't be too hard to splice it back together. If there isn't enough wire to put the ends back together, make sure you get some wire of the same gauge or larger (smaller number) for the connections.

It took me prolly a day to fix the garbage under the dash in my truck, but when you don't have to worry about your truck burning to the ground or not starting when you need it its all worth it.

The main problem with electrical tape is in the summer, the heat melts the adhesive, and in the winter, it becomes brittle. Shrink wrap I find to be a PITA, especially in tight areas. What I've done for many years in many different cars (and motorcycles) without a single failure is this: I wrap my SOLDER JOINTS (no crimping) in electrical tape, then put a nylon wire tie around the electrical tape. The tie holds the tape in place in the summer, and nothing moves in the cold. Fast, easy and much cheaper than shrink wrap.

Oh, also, use quality electrical tape, not the 99 cent special from the local hardware store.

well, i didnt get a manual with it, haha! :(

I'm not 100% sure but i bet the only difference is there being a fuse for ABS on the 93's and 94's
