2000 mountaineer 5.0 awd
2000 mountaineer purchased 2 months ago with 44k on it 5.0 AWD

Stock - motorcraft oil and filter, paper filter. 3 fill-ups average 14.4 mpg
50/50 stop & go traffic and highway

Flushed motor with Amsoil Engine flush and then cleaned intake with Amsoil Power foam, added 5 qt's of Amsoil 5w-30 and Amsoil filter. Mpg jumped ro 15.7 for 3 tanks.

added Amsoil foam air filter, noticeable throttle response! Mpg jumped to 17.1 for the past 4 tanks.

Just purchased 5 gallons of Amsoil ATF and B&M remote trans filter, plan of changing either this weekend or next.

I wanted to take the time to thank all you guys for ideas on making a good vehicle better! Especially the readings of Aldive and his 30mpg explorer, they've inspired me to make a 5500lb , V8 , AWD vehicle get a 20 mpg avg on a tank of gas.

Best of luck! I too have followed aldive's thread about his quest for 30 and by doing soe of the things he has done I have acheived 22 mpg in my 1994 4.0 V6.

i now get 18 in the city and 22 on the hwy

Glad to hear your great results.

Don;t stop at 20, go for more......

Remember Al we have 2 more injectors than you do ;)

First of all ditch the AWD. ;)

It can be done. I get 20 on the highway with my V6 Sport. Catback should be the next on your list along with an intake. Next I would get a chip. And that will probably get you to your goal. Seriously, go for more!!

I agree on the intake and cat back exhaust.

I would look into a Flasher for the computer from Apten too.

Or do what Dodge did and pull the plug on a few injectors

Wouldn't some bad stuff happen if you pulled the plug on a couple of injectors? That just seems like you would need to pull the gas plug to injectors and spark plugs to get rid of the compression wouldn't you? Plus, that would just make it a 4 cyl (or 6 cyl for v-8s), and, how bad would it be if you did that? Would you kill your engine?

Dude...sarcasm. :p

The 5.7 Hemi motor does this in a little more complex way.

I assume that the Hemi opens the exhaust valve when it cuts off the injectors. I currently get 17mpg mixed driving. I am gonig to do a tranny fluid switch to Amsoil before winter. I am also going to switch over the diffs and T-case. If you don't need the AWD, you can pull the front driveshaft for a noticable mpg increase as well. I'm going to pull mine next summer.

How interesting, i just decided earlier to set the same goal with my sohc 4x4, good luck!

With the SOHC you should have no trouble getting 25 mpg on a regular basis.

I would love 25, but with a 2in lift, brush guard, and larger tires im not sure it'll happen. right now i get 16-17 with 87k miles. unfortunatly i dont know the maintenance history of this explorer since i got it in april, so im doing a tune up tomorrow.

I still get around 25 MPG highway in my truck with 141,000 miles. :D

I'm getting 24 in the 96 Sport V6 with 112K miles. Did the cleaning, plugs, wires, drilled air box, removed roof rack and steady 60MPH on the interstate to/from work. Moved from 19/20 to 23/24 mpg.
