Welcome to the site and congrats on your new purchase!
The 4R55E and 5R55E trannies are derivatives of the old Ford A4LD transmission. While many have bad luck with this family of transmissions, you can also get them to last a long time. Regular fluid and filter changes can really help them last, as can an auxilliary transmission cooler. On this site I've seen posts about them lasting 30k miles to over 200k miles. Generally though they start having problems at about 100k and often need a rebuild. I guess it might just be luck of the draw. I'm currently pushing over 300 engine horsepower through my 4R55E regularly and don't have many problems. I have a feeling it might take a dump within the next year or two though
thanks for the welcome alec..actually this is my moms explorer..i was just finding out some info for my dad...my dad has never liked fords automatics so he wanted to find out if this one was good or not...im a member of Rangerpowersports.com ...i got two(96,85) rangers and my dad has an 01 edge...im sure ill be spending some time on this site trying to figure out some mods for my moms exploder(if she lets me )
I used to hang out at RPS, but then 2 things happened: this site got really big, and RPS didn't work well on my computer. So I stopped going regularly. Sounds like you have a great Ford family! Good luck, and lemme know if you have any supercharger or nitrous questions I'm probably still one of the fastest members at RPS, though there are many more quick Rangers than Explorers.
