PTU Service by dealer

Newbie with a 2016 PIU... my PTU is leaking from somewhere and the Dealer said the entire PTU needs to be removed in order to replace the seals. Is this correct??? Oh and they quoted me $1423 + taxes to do this service.

Are you beyond the 5 year, 60k mile powertrain warranty? For that price you may as well get a new PTU.

My dealer quoted me almost $2400 for a new PTU while I was in for the latest recall. I took mine to a local family owned transmission shop and they said they’ve been resealing them rather replacing them (as long as they are just leaking not grinding or in bad shape). They’ve done 5 in the last two months. I don’t have the exact price yet but sounds closer to $500.

so if yours is just leaking I’d recommend finding a local shop. Ford will not service these even if it’s a bad seal and only replace them.

Figured I better follow up and share an update. I ended up having the local transmission shop reseal the PTU came in around $850 but way less than the dealer. I also had them replace the rear turbos lower oil return line which had been leaking. So if your PTU hasn’t blown itself apart and making noise but just leaking. Save yourself a grand or more and have the leak fixed by a repeatable shop that has done this before.

Keep in mind that the member has PIU. I don't know if the PTU is the same as inIIT the retail Explorer. It likely is but best to check.

@mjoyce2341 I live near Muskegon Michigan, not sure where you live. The shop I used is called Mark's Transmission and Auto, but you should be able to ask around for any independent transmission shop or a specialty shop that works on 4x4 trucks that will usually be willing to do these kinds of services since they often perform services on traditional transfer cases. While having the unit resealed, I would recommend that you have the 3 different shaft seals done at the same time. I don't think my transmission-side seal was done at the time and now that has a small leak and it needs to come back out. I had the Passenger side output shaft seal done when my reseal was done since it was cracked and I know others have had issues with the rear output shaft seal leaking where the rear drive shaft connects to the PTU. They are relatively inexpensive seals so it makes sense to do them all while the shop has it apart.

@peterk9 I would think by now you would know the PTU between all of the 2011-2019 Explorers/PIUs (Edge and Taurus too) are nearly identical with only minor variations or revisions over the years, clearly not, but now you do Early models don't have drains, later models and PIUs had the drains, and some have coolers attached to them, but effectively the same thing, so resealing them is going to be the same process.

I wasn't 100% sure about the PIU since many of its parts are made to withstand a more rugged use and didn't want to steer the member in the wrong direction.
