Pulley noise!?!?!

Hello, I am getting a squeeky noise from my front engine/pulley area. It got worse (louder) after a 300 mile road trip. I have squirted some triflow behind the pulley I thought it was coming from and it went away for a short time. The pulley is the one just right of the alternator and has the belt running underneath it. My question is, can I replace this pulley or do I have to purchase the whole aluminum bracket that everything on that side of the engine is bolted to? Any help would be appriciated.

Not really sure which engine you have and your engine configuration but maybe its the tensioner?

That's your belt tensioner. It's serviced as one piece, but they're not too expensive. I had to replace mine not too long ago, and a new one from Carquest was about 35 bucks. I put a new Goodyear Gatorback belt on right away too. Those are the best belts for applications such as these that are prone to belt squeals.

The tensioner is easy to change...I think it took me about 20 minutes from start to finish. The hardest part is wrestling with a brand new belt that's been all kinked up in its sleeve trying to get it to stay put on all the pulleys as you feed it around everything.

Thanks, I checked today and I have the 4.0 engine. I don't mean to question but are you sure it's the tensioner? from where I was looking the tensioner looks like it is underneath the alternater. The pulley that's squeeking is just to the right of the alternater and the belt comes over the alt. then under this pulley then over the next. Again thanks for the help, now I have to try and find one cheap. I live in a small town in Alaska with one (yes 1) auto parts store in a 320 mile (yes 320 miles) radious so you can see the logistics of getting anything cheap. !!Can you say "Bend Over"!!

it isn't the tensioner, thats to the left of the alternator. The part you want is called the idler pulley and is available at just about any parts store for around $25. i had the same problem and replaced it, now all is fine. Here is the link to verify the part:

My mistake. When you said "right" side, I assumed the right, or passenger, side of the vehicle.

just had the same problem fxedd in my 98.. it was the idler pully bearing. Fixed at dealer for $247.

Should of done it myself, but didnt want the hassle. After 3k miles of hearing that noise, its FINALLY gone, and the truck runs better.

Idler pulley takes less than 5 minutes to replace and is under $20.

I replaced both the idler pulley and the tensioner/pulley assembly. They both had very little play, but were responsible for most of the racket under the hood after 130000 miles. They are both inexpensive and held on by one bolt each and can be changed in a few minutes...

I got an idler pulley and tensioner pulley (not the whole assembly) from Checker for about $45. It worked! No more noises! Looks like most of the noise was coming from the tenisoner pulley, but I've read that the idler pulley starts to get noisey as well, so I replaced both with a new belt and called it a day. Yeepeee, yeah, wahooooo. Well I got some somple belts after giving GATOR Back a call. They heard waht I had down replacing parts and I talked to them about the products they had available and the nice gentleman sent me a sample gator back and balkamp in two different sizes. When the belts got here I planned on using one until it started making noise again then switch to the other to see what happend. I put the balkamp on first and it still says it's time to replace per the marks on the tensioner but I have not had one single noise sice July. SO far Belt # 5 is still hard at work. Not sure what happend and I still have the Gator back under my seat for that emergency.
