From what I have gathered, the pump needs to be aligned with a special tool on the A4lD tranny. Since this is an earlier version of my 5R55E tranny, does the pump need to be aligned with an alignment tool on mine. I have not seen a tool specific to the 5R, is one required? If alignment is required could you use the torgue converter installed in place as a work around? It seems logical to me, any opinions? Thanks, Dave

You are right. It uses the same tool for alignment, and no the shortcut is not recommended.

the shortcut may not be recommended but i know plenty of tranny shops who use the torque converter to align pump i had the same question with my 4r55e and i called
several shops and they all told me that they use the converter but than again they
may all be to lazy to use the special tool so if you have access to the tool use it if not
use the converter i have had no pump issues but this is coming from the guy who decided to use the old bands and guess what i will be pulling tranny this weekend
intermediate band broke(ouch) just my 2 cents worth.

Thanks for that Brad. It illustrates why the failure rate on rebuilt trannies from a lot of shops is so miserable. And why front seal replacements usually fail again within 10,000 miles. Listen folks.... I'm not kidding. This trannie NEEDS the alignment tool. My offers of free loaners doesn't seem to get many takers, and maybe they sre just smart enough NOT to take the pump off the bellhousing..... but if you want a lasting rebuild.. USE THE ALIGNMENT TOOL. (rant finished)

yea im really with glacier on this but i again say yo can use the converter but beware
you may be into it again at around 10,000 miles or earlier if the front seal fails so im
gonna pm glacier to see if i can borrow the alignment tool before i go back together with mine so be on the lookout glacier for a pm or email i will be looking to borrow it by friday or saturday the 6th or 7th

Brad happy to let you use it.

Ok, against my better judgment.....if you HAVE to align it using the convertor.... get some paper... make one full wrap in the TC snout. check the fit into the pump. It if fits easily. try a 2nd wrap. Do this until you get some interference in trying to install it and then go back to where it last fit. This will be a MUCh better approximation of concentric than just using the TC.

Better yet, BORROW the RIGHT tool !

Or do neither and do it again in a year or so. Hate to sound preachy, but folks, trust me on this one. I have your best interests in mind.

I have the more expensive version of the front pump alignment tool (solid metal, and heavy in weight). What are the differences between this tool, and the other models? I have the ATEC catalog, and it doesn't seem like the other ones are that much different in appearance.

Anything that makes the pump concentric will work.
