pump alignment question

when aligning the pump on a a4ld what exactly are they alinging.is it the position of the pump gear so the converter neck will fit or is it being centered to the housing .

The hub of the torque converter has to mesh with the gears without putting stress on any points. Everything has to turn freely. There is a tool that aligns the pump gears which is similar to the hub of a torque converter. The clutch on a manual transmission has to be aligned too, but the tool is different.
