96 Explorer XLT 4.0 OHV
I recently pulled my 4.0 engine out of my '96 Explorer to rebuild my crankshaft. I had the crank ground and new bearings and put it all back together and it runs great, but in hindsight I don't know what engine I have: pushrod?, SOHV? How can I tell? The VIN does have an 'X' in it and I know it only has one camshaft and one timing chain but I'm not sure what the top part looks like underneath the intake manifold. And what transmission do I have? The reason I ask is that the guy at the parts store asked me what engine and what transmission I have so they could get me the correct transmission filter and gasket and tell me what the capacity the trans is. Is it 4 quarts, 5 quarts or 9.9 quarts? I have no clue on where to look. If it helps it is a 4x4.

1996 is OHV. SOHC didn't come until 1997, however I'm curious how you pulled an engine and threw in a crankshaft... without knowing if it's pushrod or overhead cam? 90% of the time I can tell if an engine is a pushrod or not by just popping the hood

Most of my experience has been with older (60s and 70s) cars and trucks along with my share of foreign cars such as Opels, Fiats and VWs. Some of the pictures I've seen make it look like a pushrod, such as the coil terminal and location, or the timing chain tensioner suggests it is an OHV. I just want to make sure I am getting the right parts for the right engine.

96 is 100% OHV if you have a v6(V8 too for that matter). Thats what I have and thats what you have. It is an old school engine.

As for the trans the PAN takes about 4-5 quarts. This is what is replaced in a transmission service. Fluid is checked hot in park, watch the dipstick after about 3.5 quarts.

The entire trans is about 10 quarts(this would be if you rebuilt it and filled it dry).
