Yea so that subject may have been a little vague. I do a lot of hauling stuff up and back for people and myself from college to home, and don't want a huge system in my trunk. But I DO want SOME good bass to go along with the Xplod head unit I have in there. There is a little storage compartment thingy on the passenger side of the back corner, and Vairking has a really cool stealth sub box back there that I would like to find as well. Has anyone else done this or know how? Where can I buy such a box? Got pictures? Any info would be appreciated....

MTX makes one with or without a built in amp, JL Audio makes on, and Q-Logic makes one too.

That storage compartment is where the Subwoofer is in the premium sound package. Just go to a junk yard and get the trim piece. It'll match your interior perfectly and should be pretty cheap.

you'd want the second one.......

The second one is what you want but I really recommend against getting it.

That one uses a .7ohm subwoofer and another board member had it and blew the sub, no one makes a .7 ohm sub and MTX wasn't being helpful about getting a replacement, I don't know what happened in the end.

Here is what I'd do, get the un amped one, and an MTX 4122 amp to power it, that way if your sub goes it is easy to replace. The amp is small enough that it can be hidden easily while you have the panel pulled off to install the enclosure.

i did what cartman just suggested. i have a q-logic box with a 10" orion sub and a small orion amp that i hid right in front of the box, behind the interior panel. i made a rack for it back there our of mdf and bolted the amp to it, and thats it. everything is hidden :)

Well I sure don't want to blow the speaker out...

tbomb: you just bought the enclosure itself, and then bought the sub and amp separately huh? how did you make the spot to hold the amp then?

yeah, i bought the enclosure, the sub, and the amp separately, and i also had to buy all the wires, but thats not a big deal really - you dont have to spend what i spent on wires :p

when you get that panel off, youll see, right in front of where you will mount the box (when i say "in front" i mean "closer to the front of the truck"), youll see a spot where youll be able to screw an amp rack of some sort to part of the "body frame", for lack of a better term. i just took some measurements of the spot, and i cut out a piece of 3/4" MDF, drilled some pilot holes, then i mounted the amp to the rack, and the rack to the "body frame." its kinda tough to describe. i actually have a rattle behind that panel, so i need to get back there and take care of it, so i could get you some pics, but it wont be for a while, since im having surgery on my wrist on friday, i wont be doing much work to my truck for the next few weeks.

if you really want some detail, let me know, and ill do my best to explain in extreme detail, and maybe i can con my friend into taking that panel off next weekend to get some pics (ive already conned him into installing my new shocks for me next weekend ;) )

oh, and one more tip: youre gonna need some torx head wrenches to get the seat belts off and, if you have a 2 door, to get the screw out of the back seat window. its also a good idea to splurge and get the $5 panel remover tool - you can do it with a screwdriver, but for $5, itll make life easier and you wont risk breaking the panel.

Pics would be really awesome man. But take your time getting some, cause I need to save up a little green before I can do this. :D My Christmas present (early one) was getting my head unit put in my truck, and now I need some bass to go along with my CD's. But that's out of my own pocket now, so you can take your time with pics, but that would be great if you can get them.

Where would I get this panel remover tool you were talking about? (torx head wrenches are taken care of)

you can get the panel remover at pep boys or autozone. it looks kinda like a flat head screwdriver with a forked tip.

since you need some time to save some bank, ill just wait till my wrist is recovered to get you the pics. i can definitely get them for ya, since i MUST fix that rattle (its driving me nuts), just contact me when youre ready, to remind me - PM, email, IM, etc.

Mike, if you're interested, I'm selling the electronics assembly from my 1995 Eddie Bauer. It has the door speaker amp (to replace the current one you have), JBL subwoofer amp, and a custom fitted 8" Rockford Fosgate subwoofer to replace the JBL 6.5" that comes from the factory. It's on eBay Dead Link Removed. It will fit in the spot that your storage pocket in the rear is now and comes with the trim panel to replace the pocket. It should plug right in, but I'm not positive.

I am just planing on building my own to fit the speakers I want to run. JL makes an empty one but doesn't have the air space I am going to need.

I have been in car audio for almost 15 years and Never heard of a .7 ohm sub. even for a powered one.

tbomb: Thanks man. I'll definitely get in touch with you about it. Probably more over Christmas break, or even maybe later in the spring. I'm doing it for sure, just not sure on the timing thing as of yet. Hopefully over break...

adam: Thanks for the offer man, but right now I'm not sure where I stand with my cash situation, and so there would be no way for me to give you a definite yes or no, see what I mean?

I have the Clarion set-up in my sport. The MTX specs look a bit better. 100W RMS compared to 40W and the MTX has an adjustable crossover from 50-150hz where the Clarion is set at 75hz. The MTX is also $450 and the Clarion is only $200.

The sound from the Clarion is suffice. When I really have it cranked the back of the X rattles quite a bit. It has really good punchy bass for hip hop type music, and for rock its good too.

The only problem I had with the install was I had to relocate the factory amp because it was kinda in the way. I think that is just a problem with the sport. Other than that it was all good.

I would suggest just getting the Clarion unless you have double the money to spend and absolutely need the huge bass. The thing is, you won't get huge bass out of the 1 MTX 10" either. I had 1 MTX 10" Blue thunder in my Nissan 240sx hatch. That was a sweet sub until it got stolen. The sound from the Clarion is not as good as that was, but I don't know if the sound from the MTX enclosure will even compare to the MTX BT because the subs are totally set up differently. The enclosures run on D class amplifiers (low current draw) which is deffierent from your normal car audio amps. You will know what I mean when you see the power cable from the enclosure amp, it is the size of a stock speaker wire.

Anyways, hope this helps!!!

I'm looking to buy a sub enclosure for my 94X and would like further advice. I'm considering both the MTX Thunder6000 and the first Clarion mentioned earlier in this thread. Both have a 10" sub but I think only the Clarion has the built in amp. Prices are about the same. I'm not looking for kick-@ss bass-just better sound quality without sacrificing cargo space. This is my first foray into truck audio so I know practically nothing. HELP!!!

I had the MTX setup for a while, it added a nice amount of bass, but not "huge" by any means. Its alot easier to work if you get a torx t50 for the rear seatbelt and I THINK the window is a T20

Magic...
Did you have the one with the built in amp or did you get a separate one? If so, what did you get and where did you mount it? Thanks for the info.

It was 2 summers ago, I got the MTX that had the amp and sub already in the box. Their amp fit in the box. just had to peel the panel back and slide it. was held in place with a couple screws. the mesh grille had some screws holding it on from the backside

factory box

Is the factory sub box good enough if I purchase a new sub and amp?
I have a 97 xlt without the factory sub and amp. I am planning on going to a junk yard and finding the factory box. Then replacing the sub and amp. Will the factory box sound good? And if so will I need to get any additional hardware? Are there any sub/amp suggestions within a $300 price limit or do you suggest getting an all new box/amp/sub for that same price?
Thanks for your suggestions.
