ok my 97 mounty has 177,000 miles on it. now my Q is what if it still has the original AFT fluid from new in it , would it do more Harm than good to put new stuff in it. i had a explorer and that had 150,000 and it had the dip stick plug still flouting in the pan from new. what are your guys thoughts on this

IMHO I would just drop the pan and change the filter. Bring the fluid back up to full and drive it...
I dont think the flush/change of all the fluid is a good thing.

197K on my sisters (might have been OEM for all we know..) started slipping and did a t-tech and filter change, prob solved... It's hit or miss. Some will argue against and some for. I say change the fluid and filter, if it slips or lets go, it was gonna happen anyway.. :popcorn:let the arguments commence

I use to hear of people having trouble with putting new fluid in, back in the 70's / 80's. I am not sure how much trouble it actually is with a " newer " trans.

That being said, I have never flushed out the fluid on anything I own, but have always used Valovine High milliage trans. fluid on everything over 125K and have not had a problem.

I would simply drop the pan, replace the filter and top off with the high milage stuff. My Ex currently has 240K on the Trans.
