question about 1998 xlt sohc

just bought it and everything works perfectly, no noises or anything(knock on wood) and i've been doing as much reading as i can about Explorers on this forum. so what should i look out for? what should i be weary of? i am going to bring my car to the Ford dealership to see if all the recalls were done, is that a good idea? i fugured out i have the sohc thanks to this site, i will figure out later today what my axle code is so i know what gears i have too. Anything else i should be looking to do? thanks for any help in advance

First off, welcome to the forum. As for what you should do to your Ex, that all depends on you. You can lift it and lock the axel and put on bigger tires for offroading or you can build a street truck. There is a ton of useful information here, it just takes some time and patience to learn what you want to do and then find the info on how to do it.

One suggestion though is not to come in here as a new member and start posting that guy's aren't too nice. It's not a good way to get answers to your questions. Good luck with your truck, and again, welcome to the forum.

thanks for the welcome, not trying to start anything. I'm not saying guys here aren't nice, just not many friendly people. I see a lot of views on some of my posts but very few responses. I belong to many forums(mostly car audio related) but this is the least friendliest forum of all the ones i frequent. Not trying to start anything again just pointing out the obvious. Anyways thanks for the response and i will get to reading immediately. Thanks to this forum(and another explorer forum) i already know i have a sohc 4.0L v6 engine(didnt know that when i bought the truck), i know i have 3:55 gears(gotta figure out what this means), i now know the keyless entry code to get in my truck as well and a few other things too. Thanks again for everything

What future plans do you have for your X? will it be just a daily driver or are you planning to go off road or make it a street truck?

The weakest link in the explorers is the transmission. If you plan on towing or off roading look into a tranny temp guage. Also keep on top of the maintenance on not just the oil but tranny fluid, rear gear oil, transfer case (if 4x4). These are very nice trucks and will take some abuse and you should be able to get into the mid 200k mile range with no problem.

Now for your comments on this site. The people on this forume are very nice and very helpfull and I know have saved people thousands of dollars. There are alot of people that visit this sight and will just read the posts and never comment. Don't think that just because you see alot of views and few posts that people aren't friendly. I know if I ask a question I want a response from someone that knows what they are talking about and if I have to wait till that person gets on-line and reads it then I will wait. If you start spouting off and making personal remarks then this will not be a friendly site and you won't get a responce.

thanks for the advice, didn't know guys and girls here are so sensitive, i was just saying people didn't seem friendly around here, again not trying to start anything and i do understand that just because people view your posts doesn't mean they know the answer as well or they may just wanna read the post.

I don't plan on off roading nor do i plan on towing, i may use my 4x4 in the winter if the snow gets too high though. I will keep on top of the fluids for my car(motor oil,tranny fluid,gear oil, etc). This is just going to be a street truck. My first thing is getting my system in, after that maybe rims or other cosmetics.Thanks for all the help and direction so far, and again not trying to come off as a dick or anything. I love this site, its taught me so much already.

I think you're not getting much responses because the questions are a little vague (its not a specific question like how do I change the axle shaft seal on the rear axle).
