Theres lotsa threads on exhausts, so I'll narrow down what I'm looking to do - you guys let me know what you think.

I think I'd like to go with a Magnaflow muffler, keep the stock piping. It appears quite a few folks are happy with the sound, and it doesn't get too loud.

Resonators, how many do 1st gens have? I'm keeping my cat but I was wondering should I have the restrictive resonators removed, or would that make the truck too loud?

Let me know, especially folks who already have this setup - even with a different muffler. I *will not* be going to a larger diameter pipe.

Cheers,

lbrowne

There's 1 resonator, 2 cats. Take the resonator out.

the resonator is not restrictive

But it sounds better and louder with it off.

i never said it didn't ;) ... hell i like my truck as loud as possible ;)

Bet it's not as loud as mine. :D

well, since my flowmaster jsut dumps after the muffler and is on my toyota now, its pretty loud... 4 cylinder trucks revving at 6k rpm are loud! ;)

Has anyone removed one cat? or is it better to leave both in there?

I've seen on vehicles before where the resonator through-put decreased in size and then went back to normal exhaust pipe after.

How loud would the truck be without the resonator? I want a nice sound, not obnxious sound. (My TA is for the rumbling sound ;) )

Removing the resonator hardly makes a difference, but it will make a hair louder than it would be with the resonator in.

Running one cat is fine. I have a single Magnaflow cat on mine. This will also make it louder and give a nicer tone.

My resonator is off and i still think it could be louder.. Take it off. Also leave BOTH of the cats on..

Why leave both cats on? curious....

Not really any point. A high quality single cat will do just as well as 2 stockers.

Unless you need to replace the dual cats, just leave them alone. When you need to replace them get a nice good flow single cat.

hey i have the super 40 series flowmasters on my 94xlt and at 2500rpms its pretty loud! what is this resonator you people speak of!?? i would take it off if i dont need it! what exactly does it do? whats its purpose! ?? i was thinking about getting a straight pipe made up to replace the 2 cats so that way i can bolt when needed to smog i can just re-bolt! lol any more ideas?

The resonator just cuts down on overtones, further quieting the exhaust. They sell test pipes to be bolted in place of the cats.

Please leave the cats on...We all live on the same air dont destroy it!!! :fire:

well after i got pulled over for my exhaust...i had a thrush turbo that was dumped right in front of the axle....it was fairly loud sounded good but the cop must have not liked the dump setup.

so i took off the muffler (was pretty banged up from falling off my friends car) and i put on a new stanley tractor muffler and bought the new rear tailpipe with the resonator.

i don't plan on screwing around with it in the near future now that it is all new pipe after the cats, its quieter then i thought it would be but it has a nice little cackle at higher rpms.

I'm close to getting this done because the exhaust is on its last legs on my X.

Are there any sound clips of 1st gens with a performance muffler and resonator removed? (cats still being used) I really need to know because this is a family vehicle and I can't have it sounding like my TA with the cut out open.

I want a nice growl tone, nothing obnxious.
