well i know i should have searched but like one guy in the thread about why jeepsunlimited guys are jerks said i am lazy...plus i only have one simple question i feel you could answer easily for me....also i will delete the thread as soon as i get the answer so i do not clog up your board with junk....ok that being said...i would like to do a ford 8.8 rear axleswap into my 1997 tj ...as far as i have heard 97 or newer have discs (maybe it was 95,96,97,98 but i know it was around there) i have also heard ifit doesnt have discs it doesnt have 31 splines....is this true? i have a line on a 92 for a reasonable price and i dont care what brakes i have those can be modified later. all i want right now is some beef.....so if anyone could answer my question by providing me one of 3 things
1. year of your explorer and spline count if older than 97
2. a website that will prove this argument dead once and for all
3. a book i can read or a place i can call
thanks guys after all the jeep boards i was on failed to be able to answer myquestion to my satisfaction i thought gee i am a dummy why not ask the guys that wheel them and break them all the time...so thanks guys and if you wanna :shoot: mefor not searching feel free i will try to put my bulletproof vest on quickly:)

Every Explorer 91-01 came with a 8.8 31-spline rear axle. The 91-94 models have drum brakes, but those can be switched fairly easily over to the disc brake set up that comes on the 95-01 models. There's even a tech article here on the site that explains how to do it. Also, The rear axles in the 95-01 Explorers are also 31-spline 8.8s, only with disc brakes.

A quick search on this website will prove the point for you.

We wheel'em, but they don't break! I can't recall ever hearing about someone breaking an 8.8.

LOL...exactly my thinking RangerX. On the Jeeps do the axles break? Is that why you were looking for the ford one? i've just never heard of a busted axle and was wondering.

more or less i meant wheel them and work on them ...my apologies...jeez just :hammer: smack me around a little i will come through lol....well i have been searching and still no website or anythig that PROVES to me that ALL explorers had the tougher 31spline axles....but you guys are making memore confident gee i cant wait to get an axleandmy 35's:D then i can :bounce: all over the trail...wow your smilies rule:D

Yeah I dunno if there is some website that proves it, but i think the people on this site are pretty good proof :-)
Also if you need an axle I think if you look down deep in the for sale forum you'll uncover some axles for sale....

well 95+ is discs, i think every year is 31 sline, cause Paul Gagnon did a drum-disc brake axle swap and didnt have any problems. http://www.explorer4x4.com/discrear.html

Actually I swapped in a complete '97 disc brake rearend. Someone else did put the M2300G kit on their Explorer and I think there was a writeup about it too.
