Question about JL Stealth boxes and QLogic ones.

I'm looking to put as big of a 10" sub as I can into one of these enclosures but I don't know how big I can. I was interested in an Eclipse 10, but I can't find out how much they are or what they're recommended air space is since I wouldn't have a whole lot to use.

Anyone have any ideas?

an eclipse aluminum 10" sub needs about .83 cuft in a sealed enclosure (and that's after the sub is installed). those enclosures are only about .6 cuft, and that's when empty.

i know that a few people put a JL 10W6 in their stealth boxes. that's a really good sub. also someone put an a/d/s 10" in.
 






Do you know what a/d/s? I'm really interested in using the JL stealth box because it's fiberglass and looks pretty well built. How did the 10w6 fair inside of it? Same for the a/d/s 10.

the a/d/s/ 310rs.2
personally, i think this is an awesome subwoofer. it's very efficient and has amazing frequency responce for a 10" sub. and the lightweight aluminum cone makes it sound great. the sound quality and spl are impressive.
the JLW6 is also a good sub. i think it's a matter of personal preference. i actually like the JLW3 better, but that takes some modification to make it fit.

out of those subs, i would definitely pick the a/d/s/. but that's just my opinion.

do you really need a stealthbox? because any of these subs will sound good in the stealthbox, but they'll really blow you away in a seperate enclosure in the cargo area.
 






Well my problem is that I used to have 2 12s that I loved having that kind of bass, but with this X this time around, I'm trying to make it as clean and non-"seeable" as possible. The stealthbox is something that I would love to put in, because it's so hidden. Maybe I'll look into the a/d/s a little more and see how much they are. That sounds about what I want to do. Other than that I might start tweaking the box I designed for the amps to accomodate a sub (1 10"). We'll see how it goes. But if the a/d/s does sound good in the stealth box maybe that's what I'll do. By the way, isn't the W6 a bigger sub than the W3, why would the W3 need work to make it fit?
 






OH yeah, and one more thing. Would it really be a bad thing to put 500w RMS to the a/d/s/ even if it's RMS is 600?
 






Hey guys. I'm the one who had the 10W6 and now the a/d/s/ 310rs.2. The 10W6 fit in the Stealthbox without a problem, but the a/d/s/ did not. Not even close. I had a custom box built out of fiberglass for the a/d/s/ which has close to 1.0 cu ft of airspace (that's about the maximum airspace you can get out of that location). I know on the a/d/s/ site it says that you can use the sub in enclosures as small as 0.5 cu ft, but when I talked to a/d/s/ they said that the sub really needs 1.0 cu ft. The 10W6 was a great sub, but the a/d/s/ blows it out of the water. I looked for a long time and at a lot of different subs before I decided on this one. Very musical and accurate without being boomy, and it can pound when you need it to.

The 10W6 is actually a smaller sub than the 10W3 in terms of depth. That's where you run into the most problems with the stealthbox: depth, of the lack thereof. When I first did my system with the 10W6, I looked into the 10W3, but it would have needed a spacer to fit in the Stealthbox, and the interior trim panel would've been bowed due to the sub sticking out.

You should be fine with 500 watts. I'm putting 380 to mine.

How much did it run you to have the custom enclosure built for the back? I'm really looking for the stealthbox type of enclosure.

Did the a/d/s/ not fit because of depth in the stealthbox? 1.0 cu. ft. might not be a problem with a box in the trunk. I'll have to see what I can do, but it would be nice to stash it in the back.

I was looking at the a/d/s/ online and it's really a nice sub. I want to go with that one, when I do this.

Do you have any pictures of your install Mike? That'd be cool to see how you have yours set up.

P.S. Had another question... Leenjen, in another post you said to wire a subs dual voice coils in series giving you an 8 ohm load for the amp, I understand that. I was reading the a/d/s/ manual for the 310rs.2 and it said that if you're using a 2 channel amp to connect each voice coil to it's own channel, giving you a 4 ohm load on each channel. Which is better? Bridging it to the series wired sub, or splitting the voice coils like that?
 






Oops, maybe I wasn't completely clear in the previous post. The a/d/s/ is in a stealthbox, just a custom made one. It fits in exactly the same place that the JL one does. I even have the factory JBL grille still in place and you'd never know what was back there. The reason that the a/d/s/ didn't fit in the JL Stealthbox was due to the design of both the Stealthbox and the sub. The trim ring on the sub was too wide to clear the part of the Stealthbox that is formed over the wheelwell. As a result, the sub wouldn't seat properly.

The box cost $400. I had quotes ranging from $350 to $600. I bought the sub at www.woofersetc.com and I highly recommend this place. I think it was around $175 and they are an authorized dealer, so the factory warranty wasn't voided. None of the shops near me would go below MSRP on it. :(

Makes much more sense. What does a/d/s/ say about how much air space is recommended for the sub?

Also do you have any pictures of the box that you had made? Maybe before it went in the truck or anything? It would be interesting to see it.

you can do it either way. both will show the amp an 8 ohm load. but subs sound better when driven off one channel. when you bridge the amp to a mono channel, the sub will get the bass signal from both channels at the same time. like i said, you could do it either way. but most people prefer mono for subs.
 






a/d/s/ said the recommended airspace for the sub is around 1.0 cu ft. You can get that with a fiberglass stealthbox.

And no pics, sorry. I actually only saw it for a little bit before they installed it in the truck.

Actually, are you in a big hurry to get this done? Because I am probably going to be selling my Explorer within two months or so. I would like to sell it with the stereo in it, but if whoever buys it doesn't want to pay extra for it, I am going to sell off the stereo seperately. I'd give you a good deal on the box. Since you're in LA it'd be easy (no shipping). Anyway, just another thought.

That would be AWESOME! I'm not in a hurry. Actually I am at school in LA and I live in Northern CA so I don't even have my X with me. I can come down to LA pretty often also because my dad does business down here. That would be amazing if you wanted to sell the box. I'd be VERY interested.
 






Where do you go to school in LA? I'll keep in touch and let you know what eventually happens with the car. Like I said, if I end up taking the stereo out, the box/sub is yours if you want it.

Hell, just buy my Explorer and I'll throw the box in for free. :D

I go to UCLA. I was actually going to be looking for another X this summer to get rid of my '91, but my parents are giving me their '94 and offing my '91 so I don't need to anymore, but I'd be very interested in the box when you sell your X.


I had another idea also... If you're going to end up selling the system out of it, I would be interested in the a/d/s/ sub and the box if you were selling it, but if you are keeping the sub, I understand. Just a thought.
 






UCLA? Awesome! Go Bruins! I went to UCLA my freshman year. Do you/did you live in the dorms? I lived in 3 South Sproul. Anyway, I may keep the sub, and I may not. For my next system in my next car I will definitely be using the same sub. The box was specifically made for the a/d/s/ sub, so I'll most likely be selling both as a single unit. I'll let you know what happens.

Oh, BTW, us So Cal Explorer guys like to get together every once in awhile in Pasedena at Fudruckers for their classic car show on Saturday nights. We'll be getting together again this summer once I get back (middle of May). You should come and join us. Even if you don't have a car, I could swing by and pick you up since it's on the way. The car show sounds fun, the only problem is that I have finals and papers due all the way up until June 15th and then I'm going straight back up to Northern CA. I do live in the dorms... They opened a new one called DeNeve with cleaning ladies for each room, because we have private bathrooms and we have heating/air conditioning. Everyone thinks it looks like a hotel, I think it's GREAT. Anyways, my dad does work a lot down here so I'm sure coming down to So. Cal during the summer wouldn't be a problem if you ever decided to sell the box or whatever.

BTW, why did you switch to Michigan?

Well, I'll keep you updated anyway and hopefully you can make it out there. It's usually only a couple of hours and a lot of fun. So you're in DeNeve, huh? I remember when they started construction on that way back in '98 when I was a freshman. Took 'em forever to finish it.

I went to Michigan simply because I needed to be someplace new for college. UCLA was a lot of fun but it was almost like being in high school again (same people, almost everyone went home on the weekends, etc.). Besides, as I have found out, you need to get out of LA for awhile to really appreciate it. Trust me, I'm never leaving again!
