Hello friends, I would like to see if this is normal.

My 2002 Ford Explorer xls 4.0 v6 runs smooth and shifts through all the gears with out any problems, hell it shifts so nice I cant eve notice when it shifts.

But... When I took it on the highway at 60 to 70 mph RPM would stay at 1800 to 2000 Isnt that high or should it be around 1500

Ohh and how many speeds to these things have 5 or 6 :D because I can see it shift 5 times and the RPM would go down to to 1500 and when reaching the speed 60 to 70 it goes to 1800 and 2000 and it stays there

Living in Atlanta, I hardly get up to that rate of speed. But I'll try to check.
Next time your going 60-70, let off on the gas and coast. Do you continue to coast unabated? Or do you feel the engine/transmission slowing you down?

If overdrive isn't working, you'll feel the trans slow you down.

That is all pretty vague; there is a big difference between 60MPH and 70MPH, as well as between 1500RPM and 2000RPM.

From your description, everything is fine. It is a five-speed overdrive transmission, and if fifth gear were not engaging you would be somewhere around 2500RPM at 65MPH.

@ 60 I'm averaging 1700. If I have to apply any more pedal, it's 2k.

When I'm doing 75 on the highway I'm at 2200 rpm. I would say what you are seeing is normal.

Thank you guys I was just wondering if this was normal and it looks like me and Number4 are at the same range.

And thank you JoshMcMadMac for the explanation
