I just removed the air box from my X today and used 3" PVC to reroute the intake through a cone filter, it isn't a K&N or anything, but looks like it'll allow plenty of air for the V8.

I got a nice hum when I nail it now, but I punched it and held it for a little bit (not till the RPMs got way too high) and got a rotten egg smell.

What's up with that? Anybody got any ideas?

Did you hide any eggs in your car at easter?

:D

Nah, and I didn't fart either!

:D

Rotten egg smell is usually a sign of the engine running super rich. The un-burnt gas gets burned in the cats and produces the oder. This is very bad, because it super heats the cats and leads to their early death.

It could be that the changes you made to the intake have caused the EEC to richen the mixture too much. Not quite sure why, but rotten eggs = way rich. Did you change anything else or put on a different MAF sensor?

Same MAF, I was thinking perhaps it (computer) needed to relearn the mixture given the difference in airflow.

I thought I'd pull the battery tomorrow to install the 2nd battery that's going into the open space where the airbox was.

I gotta rewire the amps and secondary fogs to the deep cycle I'm putting in and setup an isolator for that...

When I hook it all back up I'm hoping it will learn the proper settings for the change.

I was told after disconnecting the battery the computer learns how to configure settings and read sensor measurements from scratch, but I may be working with misinformation. Wouldn't be the first time.

usually when you work in yoru engine, itz a good idea to disconnect the negative battery terminal. that way you wont fry anything or hurt yousrelf. also, it is a good idea to disconnect the battery for a lil bit and connect it again after you put in the intake. the computer does relearn.

Do not use 3 inch PVC pipe.. PVC is plastic, trust me im an electrician i should know.. you can heat pvc pipe to 120 degrees and it will start to bend.. leave it there too long and it will melt.. you would be better of to get the correct material for the job.. when we heat PVC to bend it gives off a smell similar to what you are saying, not quit rotten egg but a foul smell like hmmm maybe burning plastic? :fart:

When I started I realized I was gonna be late for work if I didn't knock it out quick.

One of those one cut too far to put it off till later things...

Not that I'm stupid, but I just can't bring myself to disconnect the battery every time I work on it, although there are some things that I always disconnect for.

Thanks for the heads up on the computer learning the new settings though...I thought it sounded like pretty good info to me.

It's definitely rotten egg...there's a few people that've used PVC for getting the airbox out. I haven't read anything bad coming of it yet...but I'll check it closely for a bit and see what happens.

The only solution other than PVC is to buy the "kit" that sells for like $250.00 here in NYC. I'm planning on trying to rig some type of snorkel in after I get the 2nd battery in. Once the battery is in I'll know if I have anything to work with in terms of room to push through into the fender well.

Should put the snorkle on the top of your hood... not in the fender well... i dont know but all i know is it doesnt take much to bend the PVC and all you need to to is grab some fitted stainless steel . adjust it right and put your MAF on it.. mark it. drill it and poof you have your aftermarket hand made shiney air intake system.. and i bought my system for $56.00, what year is your X? Check out EBAY they got some damn good deals there.

I've read on the board there are some problems with using metal...heat transfer problems.

The problems aren't as bad with plastic and rubber, but the metal robs power because it transfers the heat to the intake air more readily than the other compounds.

The snorkel is going to go through the fender well and out up through the fender along the passenger side pillar.

Someone here did it, but used the airbox out into the fender well, I need the airbox out of the way for the battery though.

If your PVC is in fact melting, take it off!! PVC fumes are toxic and will kill you if you breathe them in. Trust me, I know!

LOL pvc fumes from melting pipe is not toxic.. your thinking of BURNING PVC.. we melt PVC all day at work i think we would all be dead by now... Trust me i know
