Question about the RPM gauge in first gens

I have a question about the RPM gauge in first gen Explorers. My 1992 Eddies RPM gauge will slowly drop down once you get off the gas. But I remember that in the 1991 XLT my brother had that the RPM's will drop down as soon as you would get off the gas. They both were automatic four door models with the V6 OHV. So I am just wondering if both were working properly or did one of them have something not functioning. So what do other first gen RPM gauges do? Thanks

Somtimes mine will go down right away, sometimes it will hang a sec then drop. Depends on conditions I guess. I did notice the auto's will hover a bit more the the sticks do.

Yeah but mine doesn't hang for a second then drop he will just slowly drop down.

try getting the RPMs up there, where you would notice it dropping slow, then put the tranny in neutral and see if it drops quickly or not.

i wouldnt imagin this being a huge problem... i dunno when my went out, it would just go to 3k rpms and sit there haha.

Mine goes down right away from what i recall. I do think that it has gone down slowly like you have described before, but that is usually in colder weather. I don't think that this has to do with the actual tach, more likely is the engine itself.

Funny that you say that because my X runs really cool it will rarely go past the "N" in normal. Has been like this since we have owned it and the thermosat has been replaced before. what else would cause it to run cool.
