manual trans, 'nuff said

the v8's have a strong tranny also

consumer reports says 95-97 are the most reliable but yeah the V8 AWD's are nearly indestructable...

come on guys i know there are some other people with extensive exploder knowledge who can give some input, thanks to the guys who already posted.

well if u like your truck except for the trans maybe u might want to do a swap
there are alot of posts about ppl swapping out for i think it was the 700r? or something like that i believe its a chevy trans , chevy trans are better i think i had a chevy with 367,000 (84 caprice) and it was the original trans so maybe look into that

Girlfriend has a Caprice Wagon and had to have a trans rebuild at 100K miles. The 1-2 shift is horribly slow, and jolty. It's not the 700R4 though. Whatever the 305 came with (It has an Olds 307 because the 305 junked out at 90K miles) is the trans in the Caprice. It's an 86. I think GMs are garbage personally. You couldn't sell me on anything GM ever again after dealing with a Buick that was less than perfect, and this Caprice which won't even idle.

As for the Explorers...the 5R55E first used in the SOHC V-6 Explorers in 97 is amazingly better than the A4LD. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise. 146,000 miles on my stock 5R and it still shifts perfectly. The SOHC is also a very reliable motor once you get those chains fixed, and the gas mileage is much better than the OHV.

In fact, *flame suit* the SOHC/5R combo is better than the OHV/A4LD in nearly every way possible. Glacier (I belive that's his name) has an incredible write-up on re-building the A4LD. It goes into the weakness of the overdrive unit, and he states that the 5R's new pieces (It is NOT just an A4LD with an extra speed) make it much more durable than the overdrive C3 trash. Ford wouldn't be using it in the new Mustang if it didn't think the trans had some merits.

I think just about any 2nd Gen with the SOHC or V-8 (The V-8's 4R70W auto should give you next to no trouble) past '98 (The new tailgate looks much better IMO, and I like the round foglights) is a great truck. Can't say much about the ControlTrac, but the auto hubs seem to be a pain. The 2WD is great. This idea of ball joints going out every 30-60K miles or whatever is a myth to me. I'm running on my original front end, and rear. Didn't even do a brake job until 90K, and I'm still running on 3 original rotors. They are now finally below spec, but brakes still work. Suspension is also stock. I have gone to the beach, and done minor off-roading. No serious trail driving, but I've done some mean things to this girl, and she hasn't done this to me ever  . I love my X! :D

It's hit and miss with A4LDs. Some crap out all the time, some go past 200,000 miles without rebuilds.

The GM transmission swap is a possibility.

I would NEVER let something like the transmission keep me away from a vehicle I like.

Manual is the best way to go. The M5OD wasn't the world's best, but they don't g oto hell under load. I don't cringe when I floor my sticker.

Synthetic fluids, shift kit, extra filter, and extra cooler will help an automatic. If you've had 3 rebuilds from the same person, within a more or less short amount of time, I would find another rebuilder.

'cept for the u's...

keep em coming guys this is awsome info, yes i do like my 94 auto but i dont like the trans and i do let it stop me because its my third in 2 1/2 years and no not by the same rebuilder ive had two different ones and my buddy also has a 94 and he is on hie second in 1 1/2 years by a totally different rebuilder sooooo., i am intersted i think in the v8 awd ex that seems to be what im looking for and you guys seem to think its pretty strong but i still need to do some more investigation (id hate to get another ex with the problems mine has given me, even things other than just the trans but that being the major problem $3000 in 2 years is a bit hefty to me just to have the same thing happen again) but anyway thanks for the info and keep em coming. :D

I would say the AWD V8s are one of your best choices. The 5R is a pretty good one. Just don't get it behind the 4.6. Ours crapped the bed at 33k. The 4R in my '95 is about to crap out too. But its done a good job for the past 88k miles. I'm looking to upgrade to a V8 in the very near future. Don't even want to mess with the tranny.

I think V8 in either AWD or 2wd would be the most reliable choice. The 2wd would get better MPG, and eat less tires.

actually you'd be supprised at the milage you could get with the AWD...

I know the mileage you can get with the AWD. I also know you would get better mpg not driving a t case, front driveshaft, diff, axles, and tires.
