I just checked the oil level in the automatic transmission and when I wiped the stick on a white paper towel I noticed the the towel not only had an oil stain on it but a gray stain I assume to be normal rubbing wear particles. For those of you with aux filters, do you still have a gray stain when checking your transmission dip sticks?

I have the filter, run Mobil 1 synthetic ATFm and have never seen what you describe.

You might wabt to do a complete flush.

Good luck......

If your fluid is grey then it's either really dirty and/or it has water in it.

It does reduce it

You're talking about the faint hint that is left on the rag. I also put about 5 ceramic magnets in the pan and use the newer microfelt filter in the pan instead of the screen. Takes a couple of fluid changes to clean it up.

Thank you for your replies:

I just did one this summer and haven't put more than 10,000 miles on since than. But I haven't checked the dip stick, until now, since than.

The transmission fluid made a nice red stain on the white towel. The gray stain is from normal rubbing wear particles that were attached to the dip stick. The particles attache themselves to the dip stick because they are HIGHLY magnetic. Unlike the component of nonmagnetic steel that they came from, which has many magnetic domains randomly orientated, normal rubbing wear particles are so small they are said to have only one magnetic domain (The particles of wear, Sci. Am.,230 (5) (1974) 88-97).

Yup, that it's.

Haing a lot of magnets helps the most

The plastic strips aren't that strong. Have the most surface area by using multiple ceramic magnets. As the magnets get coated, the strength decreases. I have seen individual needle bearings sucked up into the filter so the flow can easily pull particles from magnets. Most cleaning by them is done when the engine is off for a period. I don't think these particles are dangerous. Have found that the pan gaskets can often be used multiple times without damage or leaks.
