I would like to install an Alpine IVA-W205 into my 96 Explorer XLT. Crutchfield says that the two are not compatible. Can anyone here verify this for me?

Thanks.

it looks like an ordinary double din system so it should fit just fine. You'll need to buy an install kit for an extra couple of bucks but other than that it looks good to me.

I've been looking at installing the same unit in my stupid dooty. I've read that only a little lip on the dash around the HU opening must be trimmed. But you can't tell once its installed. Dunno.

anything can fit...with customization

Thanks for the quick replies.

I found a similar thread: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=192065
It looks like it may be a tricky install. Considering I'm trying to make it look like a factory install, I'm hoping I can find something more than a generic mounting kit. Is that wishful thinking for a 1996 Explorer? If I can find a kit that will allow the head unit to be mounted flush with the factory trim (as opposed to recessed), that should eliminate the need to alter the trim. Something like what's in the upper right hand corner of the bestkits.com homepage would be perfect (except double-din, of course).

Forget the Alpine W205, I just found out the W505 is due for release in April! It looks like a sweet unit!

Link???

welcome geronimo

Thanks Sam.

Regarding the W205, I talked to a guy from Myer Emco who said the unit will fit just fine with the Metra installation kit. I am hoping the W505, with its 1/2-inch larger screen, will fit as well.
